Fred Hall Knot Contest - Tie one on !

At the Izorline Booth.
The proceeds go to the legal fund for Fighting the MLPA Lawsuit !
$5.00 to enter in the contest - tie your best knot and have a go at it.

I spent some time at their booth today tying knots. I tied a few cow knots that broke above the line test, so I was happy about that.

I also saw a few knots tied with 60 lb. test that broke over 100 lbs.

The Izorline Booth is in the last building - in the 2nd row from the right as you pass through the doors.
I don't know the number of the booth.

Look for Wendy Tochihara she is working the booth.

That's really cool. I always wondered how well I'm doing with my knots. The only test I can make is when I snag on rocks or kelp and then spend the next 5-10 minutes pulling up the line without flipping over and either I get my tackle back in one piece, or the line breaks. But after pulling so fricken hard, I can't help thinking that my knot is holding up.

Its very addicting isn't it .. ? lol

The knots I tied were the real world knots I use while fishing. I was happy to see them break a good amount above that 60 lb. test.

The ring used on the machine is always going to break our knots sooner than what would happen if they were tied to a smaller diameter hook ring.
-So it takes a special application more suited to the ring diameter.

- which I'm sure you know if you tied a 99+
---------------------------
A few things that work.
-Draw the knot the shortest distance possible.
-Don't cinch the knot down like a gorilla - draw it uniform and let the machine do the serious tightening.
-Tie it wet if you can. This is a little tricky, but it helps.
-Double all the knots.

and lastly don't yank on the tag end hard, draw it uniform, but not seated too tight. This step can and will damage a critical part of the working line.

Good Luck
see you there.

Never found the booth. Wish they had a map of vendors - but, that is additional cost, I know.

I agree. A map would have been very helpful. I wasted a lot of time walking back and forth looking for vendors. Even just a list of the vendors and stages in each building would have worked.
I did find the Izor booth but didn't want to wait in that crush of people to see if my knots are worth a damn. I guess I'll find out when I hook a decent fish

I stopped at the booth today to tie a couple of knots after the contest was over.
I tied a smaller version of the double San Diego to the ring, something that would be practical to fish.
It broke at 98 lbs when tied with 60 lb. Izorline mono.
Sometimes less is more.

-Then there was this...
Something I had been experimenting with in my garage for the last few days, and testing head to head against every other knot. Something special to work on the machine, a knot that might cause some controversy in the contest.
So I tie it with the 60 lb.........and it breaks at 197 lbs.
You read that correctly 197.

Needless to say, I'm going to practice with this some more for next year.

BTW - the winner's knot broke at 102.5 when tied in 60 lb. test.
Izorline makes some strong stuff.

Its not wizardry its more of a deep fascination with knots, and adapting a knot that is best suited to the machine. Like I said in my earlier post yesterday, it takes a special application.

Combine this with the fact that I worked everyday at the show and spent a lot of time watching what type of knots were tied. I saw something that i thought would work.
-I also have too much time on my hands.
---------------------

Anyhow - nobody could tie a knot that was stronger than Wendy's, not even the winner of the contest. If she tied a knot with her eyes closed she could still put most people to shame.
-Its a good thing they don't let her enter.

i wanted try my uni to uni (floro to spectra)knot but they said they werent setup for that but they did show me a new uni knot (at least to me) its a tapered uni knot that is claimed to work very well and glide through the rod guides easier. it wasnt tested either.

Thank You!!!

Thank you to those of you who entered this years Izorline Knot Tying Contest, because of you we were able to raise just under $2,000. Izorline is going to match your donations and split the money between the Ocean Access Protection Fund and Friends of Rollo.

If you didn't get a chance to tie a knot we will have our line testing machine at Day at the Docks on April 17th.

Thanks again!!!
