If your only going to use it on the yak save the extra 100+ bucks. Most of the batho lines and depth shading available with the "Insight" maps don't really cover the inshore areas we fish the most. I was pretty disapointed when I saw the "insight" maps vs. base maps side by side for the SD inshore area.

I was considering the HDS5 but in the end it was only going on my Kayak, so I went with the Elite 5 DSI... Which most people I talked to still said that was overkill. The only thing the HDS 5 had was the capability to network and in the kayak not all that important. With the savings in price I got the Fish 'n Chip which is going to be awesome! |

What Scallywag said. I talked with the Lowrance and Navionics guys at length at the Fred Hall show. They recommended the Base Map with the Navionics Fish N Chip. Contours to 1 foot with much more definition and highlights.
BTW, don't bother with the Elite 5 right now, they have some bugs to work out. I just traded mine in for the HDS when it develoed its 3rd problem in just a few months. |
