Most Southern California fishing books that they sell at most tackle and sports shops have list of the fish in our waters with pictures.

Fish-in-Map co has maps for most of the west coast, if the fish are there is up to you to figure out, at least it gives you a starting point.

I contact the DFG people to get their fish ID book. Looking it to reply here I came across the artist:

I contacted the illustrator, he's out of the DFG books, but told me you can send an e-mail and request one. He has some awesome drawings on his site - worth checking out.
