Islander Trip May 14-16
This is going to be an epic trip with epic people. Ballast Point and Reebs Lures have officially confirmed that they will be sponsoring this trip. There are only 9 spots left at a blockbuster price to fish San Clemente Island all day from your own kayak for only $295. That price includes your food, bait and ! Part of the Proceeds will be Donated to Rady's Children Hospital. I hope to see you on the boat that weekend! Tight Lines! Matt Moyer |

I would love to go and be a help to any childrens hospital(While fishing to boot!)But my schedule is too unpredictable with my son and I cant really commit to any thing. Also $295 is still $295 and its a tough year for carpenters.I went 2 years ago and got no glory fish but it was wide open 10# bonita and killer bass fishing.I suggest everyone try try the sand for flatties they are super thick there.

standard iron rods 1 yoyo and 1 surface....40lb
1 bass rod for plastics and can also double for the butt hunter in close if need be...20lb mono or braid if that's your thing...I prefer the 15-20lb mono for the plastics... and the most fun...the 25 to 30 lb mono or 30-50lb braid set up for the MC slugs bouncin' across the kelp for the calicos to blast! I can't wait...I'm on the June 4-6 trip... |

done two already, going back on the 4th. can't offer much advice on the big fish, but the calico are thick there. get weedless jigs like the warbaits and fish with swimmies in the thick of the kelp. spectra with a short top shot. also, have a few big MC slugs ready to go. (hint: fish slow, using only the reel to twitch and wind. don't set the hook. point the rod tip at the bait, let them take the slug, wait, watch the line look like a laser beam...then wind. once you can't wind anymore, then set. lessons learned the hard way!!) find the boilers and chuck right into there.
on the front side, get in really close to shore, just outside the surf break. cast right onto the beach, yes, hit the beach with the swimbait. then wind through the surf. keep the paddle close, or you'll get pulled in!! drags buttoned down. as you drift the front side, you'll see mixes of shore and sheer cliff. the cliffs come down and there's a ledge that sticks out a bit then drops off sharply. bass hold on the ledge. cast right into the cliff, hit right at the base. wind as soon as it hits the water. hold on!! as you drift, the water's very clear. you'll be able to see the shore structure and rocks. cast over them and wind. have fun. |
