Round 2 maps--these are the ones you need to work on (as of June 5, 2009)
For convenience, and for all of us to be talking about the same thing, I've put up the surviving MLPA maps here. Shown below are Lapis 1, Lapis 2, Opal and Topaz. Lapis is broken into two surviving maps. Lapis 1 is now pushed by the enviros.

Not to belabor the point, but Lapis 1 is the one with La Jolla in red.
Focus on red. It's the reserves (no fishing, no lobstering, no spearing, nada). (from Rojodiablo): The (Blue) areas are SMCA's. State Marine Conservation Areas. The nearshore, thin iterations will be replacing the current SMP State Marine Parks(Yellow). If the SMCA is large enough to meeet size guidelines, (9sq. miles minimum) then they will be considered part of the network if they allow only Mod-high LOP take. Ie, pelagics, but not lobster or sheephead/ reef fish. The (Yellow) SMP are kind of custom built for each location, moslty they will allow finfish take and lobster, but will not allow any commercial take. The Green area is called a SMRMA State Marine Recreational Managed Area. The SMRMA is actually designed to be used as a management tool for waterfowl hunting, ala Morro Bay. United Anglers put it forth as a proposal for an advanced managemet tool. In the iteration shown, it would allow fishing, with a slot limit for 14-17" only for bass and sheephead. All other take would be OK for the other remaining species with no special limits. DFG said it was too much to deal with, so they shot it down.

Here are the two remaining external proposals. External A and External B
External A is the one most widely supported...and in my opinion, more realistic than External B.

For completeness, here is the rejected External C. Some of its ghosts may try to make it in later.

Could someone please prevail upon the moderator(s) to sticky this thread? I don't know who they are. Thanks.
Joe.

Finally, if you want to see it in large, gory details.
Courtesy of a freediving RSG representative, Terry Maas. Now when you download the three proposals, more WinZip applications will automatically "see" the three imbedded proposals. Extract them to a temporary folder. Double click each to view in Google Earth. Terry Here is the link HERE ARE LINKS TO EACH OF THE 3 EXTERNAL PROPOSALS

No, that's all I have.
Do you want a zip file of the maps in large JPEG format? I don't know how to do it but I can ask one of my computer whizzes (aka my 12 or 8 YO son ) to whip it up... Joe.

Maps can be viewed publicly using the exact software that we are using in the sessions. http://marinemap.org/marinemap/ A quick tutorial: http://marinemap.org/marinemap/movie...ng_the_Map.mov Click on "Marine Protected Areas and Arrays" to get the popup that contains all the maps to date. Left click anywhere in a proposed closure to get another popup that will allow you to view "Full Info" including regulations, coordinates, rationale, goals etc.. Also in the window you can download the KML files to view in Google Earth. /MJ |

Total BS
AM I the only one here that thinks that any of these maps is a completely raw deal for the fishing community? I pretty much get that RED is a no fly zone- but am not up to speed what the BLUE and YELLOW are to represent.
My REpresentative Government is definitely NOT representing me! |

Only 3 maps are now left, Lapis 1, Topaz, and external A.
The RSG members will be split into 3 groups, one group to work on each map. They are instructed to expand each map so that it meets the SAT guidelines. None of the maps as drawn meet the SAT guidelines. Basically the 3 maps will get worse for us. How much worse is still up for debate. They have to add to them is the bottom line they got from the BRTF.

This post on "Round 2 maps--these are the ones you need to work on" (post#11) is really good ammunition. I think It might help if this was the "Next MLPA MEETING August 3rd Public Comment!"?
