Another fine Monday at DP

...but long. Launched from Baby's Beach at sunrise, fishing until almost 4:00PM. Then we hurried back to the launch to switch from fishing mode to bugging mode. We had purchased 2 additional hoops to add to the 1 we had. With everyone scoring this year we thought we'd give it a good try. Stayed out until 9:00PM, but only 1 short to show for our efforts. At least we saw one.

Our fishing day had more productive results (at least for Aaron). After we weeded through the usual shorts, Aaron caught these, a 10lber and a 23incher:

Beach shot with a chunky grump added to the catch:

We're sore today, but there's gear to clean and halibut to eat .

Awesome! You guys are the hardcore flatty masters now. How have you been fishing for the 'buts; what techniques and depths have been working up there?

Thanks for the report

Halibuts

Nice string of Halibuts you been getting. Just think of the potential of 10 nets 2 kayakers, got to like those odds for getting a bunch of legals.

Peach,
We purchase the $5 scoop of sardines at the bait receiver in the harbor.
Our rigs are 3-way swivels, short leader (10 inches) to a 1oz. chrome torpedo and a 2 foot leader to a single hook with a treble hook trailer.
We've had luck off of Doheny Beach and along the jetties. Good luck if you go.

Nice job again. I'll be up there this weekend, hoping for some similar luck. Give a shout if you're ever interested in hoopin LJ. You'll just need some more nets for those double limits. I keep trying to get my wife to go with me just for the extra nets/bugs allowed, but she's a chicken at night.

How hard is it to make bait up there? I guess the convenience of the barge is tough to resist.

Leave the sabiki behind

Brad,
If you are fishing a mile north or south of the harbor mouth, you might be able to make decent bait. Possibly some smelt around the harbor too, which is good halibut bait.
But, it is much easier/quicker to spend $5 at the bait receiver. You'll get a good 3 dozen sardines. Besides, our halibut fishing has been real close by, either just off Doheny Beach or along the jetty.
We'd love to join you for a La Jolla bug-a-rama, especially before this season ends. It was kinda trippy at first, being in the kayaks at night. So, if a calm night is coming and you are going, maybe we can tag along and hope for less than double limits .

There are enough squid out there to get about 5-10 boats from pedro per night. There is probubly alot more than Halibut to be cought in that area right now.
