July 3 on SD Bay
Got out this morning on SD Bay at around 7am. Launched from Shelter Island. The water was nice and comfortable. Very light breeze and overcast skies. A lot of tuna hunters racing out of the launch ramp. Had to be careful as they would cross close to me in their hurry to get to their first hook up. Made my way out just off of the Shelter Island Pier. Took me about 15 minutes before I caught my first sandie. She was a 15 incher and gave me a good fight. Caught two more over the next 30 minutes. Then I made my way to the lower range marker to fish the sea grass for spotties. Lots of bait fish moving around and least tern birds diving to get them. Sea grass getting healthier and unfortunately the spotties were not biting like they usually are at this time of the year. Worked hard to catch a foot long and an 8 incher. Made my way back to Shelter Island area and caught one more Sandie. Spent about 3 hours on the water so wasn't bad. Would encourage you to use dark green or smoke plastics. Will be busy tomorrow so please be careful. May the fish gods be good to you. |

Good fishin' report and nice work!
Always fun chasing sandy's and spotties for a few hours anyways. You beat the Christmas rush going on the 3rd. I hear it was a busy one at the Shelter Launch. The grey smoke sparkle is my all time favorite....kills the Hali's too. Glad you had a good time! |
