Carlsbad invite Tuesday 1/2/18

Intending to check out Carlsbad, in front of the power plant, in the morning in case anyone else is interested. If I’m wrong about the swell being small then I’ll drive down to LJ.

I’m curious to hear about your trip. I’d love to get out there and check that area out at some point. Maybe check it out in a couple weeks.

I was out at Ponto last Wed checking out the Artificial Reef. Lots of lobster bouys, but I didn’t do a very good job finding the rock piles. Tons of mackerel, jacksmelt, and a single short calico on a jigged laser minnow.

What kind of ground do you fish near the power plant? I’ve read about both kelp (still there?) and mud flats near there, and it looks like Carlsbad Canyon noses out about that area.

Launch and landing was unusually easy, uneventful. I fished the edge of the canyon 100-160’ but no bites. Bait was plentiful. I’ve yet to catch anything of consequence out there in 5 sessions besides a 5’ thresher and smaller unknown shark.

Surf is back up today so it’ll be LJ for me next.

Edit: there was a roughly 50x200 yard patch of kelp on the surface as the tide dropped.
