How?!?!

My first hobie I took it out yesterday and everything was perfect but towards the end of the day I hear the mirage drive start thumping and the kayak bogs down. I pull the drive out and this. It got me back to the launch but why'd this happen and how do I fix this?

Looks like you are going to need a new fin. Use the other one to discover what went wrong. Good idea to know how things work on your mirage drive. Not that complicated. Make sure you lube the chain wire that are exposed so they do not rust.

occasionally the fin will split right where it is attached to the outhaul block, then it just slides off the mast. Just need to replace the fin...about $30

I've had my share of mirage drive failures....but never that one. That's why I carry a spare parts kit with me at all times, it includes a spare fin. Buy one from Andy while your there at his shop!

Thanks for the help guys! I'm guessing the little brass screw comes with a replacement fin?

For a 4 year mirage drive that had not fail once. This is just one minor set back, but the overall the drive still looks very well maintenance. From what i see the fin should come with the brass screw. Also check the other side fin make sure the screw is not too far down.
