SAFETY FIRST *Graphic*
I told my son to hold the back of the kayaks so they don't slide back off the roof of the car. My wife got out to help him on her own.... the tide was low... the launch was extra slippery.... and I did NOT warn them to be cautious until after my wife split her knee open down to the patella. Fail moment for me. Take the time to tell people you are with to slow down and be cautious of their safety if you feel that you need to. My son didn't get to hop on his kayak tonight, and I didn't even undo a strap before my wife was injured already. Spent the evening in the ER. Could think of a 1000 things I'd rather have done than sit in the ER because my wife incurred a preventable injury. Hope this helps someone else slow down a bit and avoid personal injury. |

Ooh man that's rough. Hope she heals up pretty quick and none of that bacteria from sweetwater high business.
That said I was there yesterday afternoon around 530 and it was super slippery. I decided if I'm launching there at low tide I'd rather carry the yak down the dock side and get in there. Let me know if you want another helping hand on the water, I've got a lot of free time right now and am only a few minutes away. |

That sucks!
Slippery launch ramps are the worst, been there and done that but was lucky enough not to have the same end result. I've definitely broken toes slipping on the launch ramp into things. Hope that heals quick and you guys can get back out soon!

Damn, thats horrible. Low tide launch ramps are notorious wipe out zones. Noticed there are 2 gashes on your wife's knee. Just the right distance apart to match the 'non slip' ridges on the ramp. Hoping for a quick heal. Mike

She's going to "own you" for some time. That was one you'll be saying "sorry" for a while, Jay. Some day she'll forgive you!

I wonder how ramps can make them less slippery maybe there is some chemical they can use that is safe or would they have to grind the area off? There is a ramp in Ensenada that is the most slippery I have ever seen. and very dangerous.

Ouch Jay's wife.
I have fallen an my behind many times on those super sloppy low tide ramps. I did not show my wife as she is about to buy a brand new kayak for herself. |

UPDATE
Sharp stitched her up really shitty apparently. Her wound became infected and she's admitted to Balboa, re stitched, with actual antibiotics, 3 specialists, and constant care until Tuesday.... She appreciates the kind words. Thank you!
For those out and about landing at launches after sitting for hours after the right kind... Be careful! Jay |
