La Jolla 5-11-15 Double

Went out to LJ today, as I often try to do when the weather allows. Met Yanni in person for the first time today as I was getting set to launch and again at the landing. Fished a lot of the familiar spots and had a hard time making bait even though there was bait jumping all over the place. It seemed like the FF just cleared the area. Every time I would paddle into the middle of jumping bait it would clear all around me. After making the right kind of bait I trolled around and hooked and landed a 27.6 lb Yellow at 9 am. Kept fishing the rest of the day and finally at 1:54 pm in almost the same spot I hooked and landed a 16.3 lb Yellow. After a not so successful fishing trip on Saturday during the Rock Fish Round Up, I have decided to donate both Yellows to the HOW freezer. I'll be filleting and vacuum sealing both tomorrow, both are on ice now.

After bleeding them out I store it inside the kayak. I can put them in through the center hatch and that keeps them out of view and the sun light. As most know Malibu kayaks always leak in a little water inside from mostly the front hatch during launching through the waves. That little bit of water keeps the fish wet and help them not dry out. The 43+ pounds of extra weight on the front of the kayak makes the landing with the waves a little different and if I had a third fish I think I would put the third one on the back to balance out the weight. Some guys use a burlap bag or a beach towel to cover them, splash water on them to keep them wet when on top of the deck or spend some big bucks on a nice fish bag.

Nice Meeting you too!

Hey Mark,

What a day! Congrats on those two beautiful fish. Gabe and I couldn't stop talking about your fish all the way home!

Although you took off before Gabe and I, just like you, we were stuck trying to get bait. Frustrating!! Bait popping all over the place, but, not biting. My frustrations continued thru out the day. I put myself in the right place, at the right time, but no takers. With boiling fishing all around me, my heart was pounding for most the day!

Just a few personal boats, provably about 7 or 8 kayaks all day and the Chubasco went by once. Heard then call the lifeguards when they were in south LJ, they had a passenger that had passed out and were asking for assistance. The other passengers provably wanted him off the boat so they could continue their fishing day, Ha Ha.

This is a picture I took of the fileted Yellowtail for HOW. I got 14.9 lbs out of almost 44 lb. I had never compared the gross weight to the net, but 1/3 seems about right. It sure beats the small rock fish I caught for then on Saturday, all put together they provably would have made 3 tacos.

You are the man

Let me know if you see my Tady 45 hanging out of old knot heads mouth ? Just unwrapped it . Got lure wet , along with line on reel . Put into service and hooked up on first pass . Spooled my tranx on first run , maybe because grumpy was waiting for breakfast in background . Estimated weight of fish 28 lbs . Battled dog for my prize for a half hour . He towed me across lj and back . Finally he used his dog brain and took me to heavy weeds . He surfaced seconds later , 45 yards away still holding prize. I looked at my reel and my line was pointing almost straight down , hung on base of weeds .Snap ..
