First time in the Big Water. DP 3/24

Hey all. Been looking around on these forums for a while, reading lots of helpful info. Finally got a chance to get out in the ocean. Headed to Dana Point, launched at 0830 with a fellow member (Jbara). Threw some plastics in the bay for 20 mins with nothing. Headed out to the headlands. Picked up some greenbacks just outside of the bay. Fly lined a mac for about two hours and threw out my plastic for nada. Josh caught a little wsb and a small barracuda. Decided to switch my plastic to a scented z-man jerk shad. Immediately got bites on it. Caught a small sand bass, and a couple of greenies. Had another big sand bass on, just below the yak and a sea lion made it his lunch. Beginners initiation I guess . Fished for a little while longer and the bite died. Fly lined on the way back and caught a decent sized sand bass. All in all, great time on the water. Hope to do it again soon. Thanks Josh!

Damn, you know the Sea Lions are getting hungry when they start eating bass. I worked as a deckhand for quite a few summers and never saw one eat a bass. Lots of other fish, but no bass. Glad you had so much fun on your 1st trip in open water.

Hey Ed. I specifically remember reading one of your posts about gear to get started with, and it looks like it was good advice. Maybe I was wrong about the species he stole, but it looked to be the same color and size. Either way, guess I'll never know. All your guys' knowledge has been extremely helpful. Thanks!

Wow, glad I could help. Try the Paddlerz too. They'll be much more durable, though they don't have as many colors as the Gambler.

It's not common, but they do eat bass on occasion. I had one nab a nice 5# calico right after release a few weeks ago.

Nice sandy!

Nice sand bass! I'm surprised a sea lion ate it too. Their skin is like sand paper, just like horned sharks.

Nice report!
