You know...

... every time I start thinking about getting a boat I will usually see a couple of them being towed back in with some problem.

I should take that as a message?

boats

Take that as a message that those boat owners should have had a better maitainance plan...I love my skiff...I also love my kayaks...There are times and places for both types of vessels. It was a little sketchy going after Tuna and Dorado in the kayak but my skiff was on em'.
Boats are usually going to cost you more money than a kayak to maintain and run but that's just the nature of the beast. "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

like Jim, I love my skiff and I take very good care of it. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

If you're not a mechanic or very mechanically inclined and willing to spend the time to keep it in top mechanical condition, don't get one. That means in much better condition than your car. If you think a kayak and the electrical system for fish finders and bait tanks are bad enough, than get a boat and find out what problems really are. Every time "especially on week ends" and I'm out fishing and have my VHF on channel 68, it seems like the majority of the chatter is "Hi this is Vessel Assist, what is you're member number and your location, yes Sir the Assist Vessel will be there in 45 minutes to an hour and the fee will be in the range of $100 to $200 above your coverage limit. Every time I hear that I'm thinking of all the weekend boaters that don't do their maintenance and provably have electrical issues. Now that little weekend trip cost a bunch more than the cost of all that gas that boats SUCK UP. Boat are not a cheap pass time.

I have a boat on the east coast and before I moved out here, I was still using the kayak more than the boat. The maintenance is definitely a factor but it's much less of an issue if you buy a good brand and have a modern 4stroke or an etec and do the regular maintenance. If you can spend the dough on something really solid, go for it. If you're going to buy an older boat do yourself a favor and go through every inch of it with a fine tooth comb and always have a toolbox and a working radio.
