You are going to take a friend out that has not tried kayaking to County Line? I am guessing it will be there last time on a kayak, and hope that it is only by choice. There are more reasons not to do that than I even want to list.

county line
Well I took my brother out for his first time on a yak on Sunday out of county line. we got to the launch around 3:30 am and we were looking at 3'-5' sets with about a 10-15 second window between sets. But thats how county line is. So after getting him pumped up I told my bro when I say go jump in and i will give u a push and paddle like theres no tomorrow and no matter what just keep your nose straight into the waves. So I say "GO" he jumps in and right over. He jumps up out of the water and yells you said keep your nose in the straight into the wave being the clown he is. After resting all the gear on his yak and getting my breath from laughing my ass off. He went for it again and made it out to my surprise after taking 2 solid 3' waves right in the face. I got lucky making it out taking a couple in the face as well and only losing my 3rd brand new bait tank net. After reuniting with my bro he's telling me man that was nuts, thank god coming in is easier than that right, at that point all I could do was laugh and shake my head. I have a gopro video Im working on of the beach landing .
As far as bait goes There were squid boats from trancis to county line, All were anchored but none were working. There lights were on but nothing going on. We paddled up to 2 boats and worked the area around there lights for nothing, a lot of sardines no mackrel, and didnt read any squishes any were. I brought fresh dead with me from the previous week. And headed out to the deep hole for a few rock fish a short ling never found any solid marks we were there for. Ended up coming back in and working the kelp looking for never found any marks. Ended the day between the 2 of us with 4 calico 6 rockfish 50 sanddabs 2 - 4' spiny dogfish sharks and soar shoulders we covered about 15 miles of water. Water temp was 67-69 and not much current. Just take your "friend" to LJ so you dont have to drag his body back to the beach....unless you want him dead...?

Take him out to Dana or Newport. Teach him about kayaking. Practice self rescue. Look at the hot girls in bikinis. It's just not cool taking a first timer out to the big water like that.

Yes even launching at leo...1 mistake can end up in a very bad, bad, day...I mean come-on...the beach is absolutely covered in rocks! You screw up there your gonna be lucky to come out in 1 piece...not the place for a newbie.

Com-on Tony!!! It's not that bad This year alone there's only been one ankle injury that we're aware of and one broken collar bone. BTW, if you hurt your ankle at Leo Tony will help you carry your gear back up the stairs.

I recently launched at Leo on one of those "1' to 2' days," which turned out to be 4' to 6' no problem. I was lucky in only losing some cheap sunglasses, but that place can be quite dangerous. I've always started newbs out of Newport or another harbor if I just want to get them a taste of yak fishing. If you do start out of Leo make sure the GoPro is fully charged and upload immediately for "constructive criticism" please.

To promote the hobby it's not a good idea to take a friend to surf launch on their first fishing trip. I made the mistake last year in lj. My father in law was excited to try this kayak fishin out, the waves were a bit large for lj at about 3 ft. Bout chest high. He rolled 5 or 6 times on the launch and a big whipeout on the landing. Pluss big swell out on the water. He didn't have a good time. We went to the harbor the next week and he had a better time with smooth water catching sandies. He was really timid about going out after lj. I know I didn't surf launch for about 3 months after I had a kayak. Bottom line, there are a lot of great calm water launches between oc and Sd county that hold great fish to force someone into something that is very easy for you with dozens or hundreds of big surf launches. Just my 2¢.
