May be a stupid question about La Jolla fishing boundaries

On Wed I launched a little after sun up. As I got past the breakers, about 20 yards from shore I noticed a pretty large mass of bait fish being bombed by birds and chased by dolphin.

My question is, how close to shore is it legal to fish? Would it have been legal for me to drop my sabiki right there to load up the bait tank? I even contemplated throwing the waxwing in the mix but didn't want to break any laws. It was too early for anyone but us fishing folks out that early.

Not legal to fish 20 yards off the beach your still in the reserve, the actual end of the reserve is past the yellow markers. Its your responsibility to know where it is. Don't try it even if you think that nobodys watching...chances are somebody is...some tree hugger itch'n to call the dfg on you....

Search this forum. There are a bunch of threads on this issue.the best thing to do to make sure you are not in the reserve is to buy a current map and a gps.

When the tall flag on the top of the hill is lined up on the palm tree and the corner of the white building - you are at the MLPA boundary...

If you paddle straight out from the launch it's easy to see the big yellow buoys. Like ful-rac said, get a bit passed them and you're fine. I also assume that I'm being watched by naïve do gooders or folks actually watching for transgressors in the closed area so I don't even touch my rods until I'm passed the reserve.

From scripps pier to the point of the cove near the condo. If you draw a straight line and stay outside of that, you'll never have an issue.
