Newport Sat. 4/20

Hit Newport from 7:30 to 11:30. Great conditions with little wind but a bit of a swell. No live well so I worked the BHamers.

Went out to a drop off where it got to 190 ft. I've never caught anything that deep but wanted to target the reds this time. All for Nada. I did see about 5 other yakers out there. Don't know how they did, though.

Ended up off Crystal Cove in the kelp and managed 4 calicos, one legal. All caught on the green/red 4". Also hooked a couple macs on the sabiki. All in all a great day fishing. Nice to be in shorts out there again.

By the way the bait barge is back in Newport Jetty.

Nice bass! I'll be hunting them tomorrow early AM in LBC. Hoping to hear the Grand Prix over the water.

I was one of the kayakers out there, I was in a bright yellow kayak. I was out there with two other friends of mine and we did pretty well on the reds, I also got a 20" sand bass out there too.

cool.. are you bringing a sabiki rod? or do you just tie the sabiki rig onto whatever rod you have? Do you use all the hooks, or cut some off? Squid or shrimp pieces? or just bare hooks? What size hooks? I've never done the sabiki (obviously), and it looks like it would also be something fun to keep my son occupied while we are out on the yak. Thanks.

That's a lot of water covered. Way to be persistent.

Ninja,
I've only used the sabiki rig a few times. It's got 3 hooks with little feathers on them. No other bait on it. This time it was just sitting in the water at about 8 ft. while I fished my other rod. The macs just grabbed it. I've got a 2nd rod with me that I use for it and other types of fishing.

There's probably a ton of guys on here that can give you more info. on how to fish it, bait it, etc. I'm pleading ignorance and dumb luck.
