Surf Landing

Wish I had a fish to film...but put this surf landing together for my family and friends who are far, far away from the yakking thing...

I'm following Roby's advice: paddle strapped down, mirage drive in and rudder down with release in hand.

Nice Jim, you have permission to shoot me if you need to show them an example of how not to launch/land

Nice Jim. Goes to show all the guys that say a Hobie can't be surfed. BTW you were about the only successful Hobie launch Sunday morning for the first several hours.

I use the peddles and rudder coming in, but in the larger surf I also have my paddle out to use as a brace in the event that I turn sideways.

Thanks for the post

Honestly, that's why I rigged up the GoPro. I fully expected to bite it coming in...!

Is the rudder very effective in the surf? i.e. keeping you from getting side way? Can you still using leaning technique?

Hey Chuck, I haven't done this long enough to talk about differing techniques but I can speak on my experiences. When I first got the Hobie, I tried landing with the mirage drive in and banged up the fins and a rod on the bottom. So I shifted over to landing w/o the mirage drive using no rudder. With any kind of surf, I had a roll rate of about 20%. If the surf was at 2', my roll rate went to 80%.

I was recently given specifics on this technique and it's made a huge difference (thank you Roby!). The rudder has been the deal breaker. Imagine surfing a board without a fin(s). That's what I've been trying to do the past year and a half...

I keep the rudder's release in hand so it'll pop up if it hits the bottom. I'm trying to get out of the yak before it slides up the beach to prevent the mirage from hitting as well. Hope this helps. Jim

Thanks for the perfect demo. I'll try coming in with drive and rudder down next time. Mike

Awesome landing Jim!!

I can't take credit for the method. I learned it from the fellas at F*stlane.

Just a reminder: make sure the mirage drive is bungeed in as well.

I usually ride behind the waves, but your way looks alot more fun....
