Lost Mirage
Just to help me out; how were they secured that let them get loose? Always trying to prevent such craziness.

Most yakkers remove them during beach landing. If you get tossed and they're not secured there's a good chance this will happen.

just me
if you look under front hatch you will see the cables on both sides for rudder controls via pulleys. on top of kayak you will see two sets of screws that secure these pulleys .these are on both sides of the front hatch . instead of making , or drilling more holes , i used the existing holes to attach a key ring , so i could secure the mirage drive to the kayak. very hard lesson to learn . 500 hundred dollar drive lost. my sympathy to owner. but guys , including myself have lost tackle accumulating more than that. unless you are pro , secure everything . i took a piece of nylon strap ( you can buy this by foot at sports chalet ) , cut in 4 " piece , drilled or burn holes with solder iron to align with existing holes on deck of kayak . fold over the nylon strap with key ring in middle , attach to kayak and attach to the drive. of course you need something from the drive to ring on deck of kayak. hobie make a drive leash with everything ready to go. less that 20 , for a leash . small price , compared to drive or reel. pm if you need pics. good luck. there are other locations near your gunny sac to attach the drive , but attaching up front near the drive is not as invasive. pm for pics . or help. catch any fish? or squid?

Love to do that with you someday. (bucket list) I pm'd you the guy's phone number. You are going to be his HERO!!! I really felt bad for the newbie. I hope he learned his lesson and ties the drive to his kayak next time. Gabe. |
