San Quintin, 2012

Hit up San Quintin this week and stayed at the Old Mill . I have always driven south of the Old Mill to do Central and Southern Baja trips and have stayed at the Old Mill once to get some sleep on way down. The Old Mill is a great place with simple accommodations, cheap prices ($16.00/bed)friendly people and a hot shower. Also a restaurant that prepared our fish on two different nights in various ways.

We kayak fished two days with a beach launch and ended up with two WSB and a couple lost, several Calico's, sand bass, and other random fish. Mike (Florida Boy) caught a pig on the second day......no scale but the thing was a beast and didn't come close to fitting in his cooler.

The third day we went out on a 25 foot Parker through K & M Landing with the kayaks on board. Lined up the trip the week prior with Captain Kelley due to some expected swell. His son George was our Captain and he put us in the area where some recent WSB activity had been. We ended up with three WSB, multiple rock fish, a tail hooked thresher and another thresher which were lost/released. George caught a nice halibut which he ended up giving us the majority of. I highly recommend K & M if you want to do a mothership trip down in San Quintin. Family run, very nice and safe with a ton of local knowledge .

I always seem to find a way to get stuck in Baja. Well not too bad, three times in 20+ years.

All and all a great trip with no mechanical errors on or off the water, plenty of fish to be had, no issues with the authorities through Tijuana or Ensenada (even after missing a turn twice in Tijuana ), good company, and plenty of good memories.

Next year going to go down 2-3 times through August -October and can't wait to do it again.

and just noticed I put this in fishing discussions.......sorry

Great write and pics. Even the food shot had me drooling, maybe not as much as that pig WSB Mike caught. HUGE! Looks like it could have gone 70lbs.

Nice work! 30 years of traveling to baja and not once have I had any issues other than getting stuck as well. And we got lost once. But two maps and a 12 pack later and our destination was found.

wow, very cool. If you do another trip, put a post and we can caravan down. I'd love to go! Great fishing with all those WSB! And there is usually at least good rockfish.

Duuuuuuudes!!!!! WTG you guys. I am guessing that you missed the ramp to HWY 1 ? I love the sign on the other side of the exit. How many people would be comfortable at the place you stayed?

Hi Greg,

we got there on Monday night and the place was empty and then on the last night a ton of guys showed up with Baja 1000 like rigs......the Old Mill can hold a lot of people....we made the turn onto col san diego and could not get out due to barrier.......then we missed it again in the darkness......thought for sure we would be pulled over but we made it through.
