Cedar Plank cooking of fish

If you have never tried a cedar plank cooked fish you are missing out. I caught some cod and a Calico bass and brought them home for dinner. I soaked the fish in milk all day today, then rinsed them off with water. soaked the cedar plank in water for a couple of hours. Once the grill was hot I placed the plank on the grill to heat up. about 5 minutes later placed the fish on the plank. about 12 minutes on the grill and they were done. They have a very nice cedar smoked flavor.

I don't normally bring home Calico bass but after cooking it like that, I'll bring some home again. That was very nice.

Like you I am now interested in trying other things. Last night all I did was put salt and pepper on the fish and put them on the planks. However now I may try some lemon, orange, rings with the fish next time. The planks I have included some suggestions and those include pork chops, baby back ribs, chicken and of course salmon, trout, and other fish.

I have a chicken I need to cook so I may be grilling that up this evening.

Cedar plank cooking is great. However, the planks you get at the store that is packaged for sale are expensive. Got to Lowes or home dept. and get a cedar fence board and just cut it yourself to the size you need. Just make sure you buy the un-treated boards and lightly sand them.

The pack I bought at Albertson's was 2 planks for $3, not too bad, however I originally thought it was 1 plank. One side is sanded all smooth and the other side is rough. I soaked the plank for at least 2 hours. Fence boards is a great idea you can buy a full board and make a few planks, and probably for about the same price as I paid.

next time try some alder wood and / or pecan.
I place the lemon on the fish about 5 mins after I place it on the plank to cook

Years ago I heard a long joke about cooking mackerel on a cedar plank that ended with eating the plank and throwing the mack away. I actually have a few cedar planks. I'll give em a try. Mike

I'm all for trying different types of planks for BBQing fish. I love the flavor that smoke gives the fish.
