First voyage in Hobie Outback
Kids off to school at 9:15. Leave house by 9:30. drive 40 minutes to SI. In water by 10:10. Fish until 11:30. Home, gear stowed by 1:00 to pick up the kids. Yeah, i really wanted to try out the new boat! What a difference from my Stealth 12. Easier to load and what a kick in the way it will crest a wake and not just plow through it. Also, what a concept, Hull dry inside after paddling, compared to 2 gallons of water inside the hull of the stealth! The tide was flowing in nicely when I launched. Took a few minutes to adjust to using a Mirage drive. Pedaled past the pier and started to drift in 50 feet of water. Did this seven times and landed 5 sand bass. Biggest was 19 inches, smallest was 16 inches. Kept 3 for my neighbor who told me he wanted some fresh fish for dinner tonight. Love the new boat! http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/a...1&d=1339027351 http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/a...1&d=1339027352 |

Nice I am in the process of breaking in my new outback and I love it. Love to peddle not paddle!

Sounds like a great day! I just went from the Stealth 14 to a Outback and couldn't agree more about handling and the dry hull.

I thought you got a new hatch for the S12? still didn't help? I had some water in mine on my last LJ trip from the return through the surf. Not sure if from the front hatch or the side ones. It still scares me when I'm 2miles out and not sure how much water I took into my stealth14...
Glad you got a new dry yak, nice fish to boot!! |

The Stealths definitely leak through the hatches on the side. Being a bigger (ok, fatter) guy like me definitely makes the boat ride lower and more susceptible to the splash over coming in the Kayak. There is some fixes on the hatches on-line where people have lined them with weatherstripping and this seems to work pretty well. The reason why I switched to Hobie was my Stealth was motorized and now I am forced to exercise!
