Calcutta 250 setup

So I got a smoking deal on a Calcutta 250 and a turners 7'6 calico special (I understand the warranty is nuts on that thing.)

This will be my first light tackle setup and I'm looking for reccomendations on how to set it up. I was thinking put a good backing of this 30lb braid I have that is strong as hell and about the size of thread. So if I want to double it as a rockfish setup I can drop deep.

I was thinking like a 30 yrd topshot, but of what? I've never cast flouro before and it doesn't feel as limp as mono, so should I do like 15 lb mono?

I'm planning it to be a multi purpose rod, bay, kelp, stabiki, rockfish, and anything else that pops up. I know a few guys here have them, what's your setup like?

I got it for 100

If it was me I'd go for the spectra and a short topshot of 12lb. That's splitting the difference between what I use for all my bassing. I carry one 8lb setup and 2 17lb setups.

I run 30lb braid on mine. Depending on what I'm fishing for, what I'm using, and water conditions, dictates what size flouro leader I use. For spinnerbaits, long lining, or dingy water,15lb usually, never less. For swimbaits in clear water, or touchy fish, 10lb. For swimbaits in deep water like the Dana pipe or the Oside ARs or any deep stones, 15lb or 20lb. For calicos in the jungle, 20lb. I use a little longer leader than most. Usually start with about 15 feet except in the kelp. There I start with about 4 feet. I use only maxima flouro or Yozuri hybrid. But that's just me. Use whatever brand you feel comfortable with just make sure it's flouro. Experiment and dial in what works for you cuz everyone uses something different. Good luck and have fun.

I use a Calcutta 250 for halibut and I have straight #50 braid. Its not like its not like you get that much more line capacity with the 30#. I like the added comfort the 50# gives me if I hook something big and the 50# cuts in on itself less then the30#.

I have a similar setup, Calcutta 250 on a Shakespere Ugly Stick Lite, it is my favorite setup and I use it for bass and halibut. I use 30lb Power Pro with 25lb Flouro leader. I have managed to catch a 30lb Halibut and several BSB in the 30-40lb range with it, and of course. lots of bass.

I don't think you need a top shot that long. 3-5 feet is fine and the shorter top shot/leader lets you change quickly and cheaply from 10lb in the bay to 30lb in the kelp. I keep my leaders short for this reason plus I don't like casting a knot through the guides. Great score or a great super versitile out fit. Mike

Yakin, I don't think you know how Craigslist works

I have 55lb spectra I can back it with instead. I have 30lb flouro I'll use around the kelp for now, I'll pick up some 12 for in the bay.

On fishing this rig for halibut is the idea a grub or a swim bait and cast it out and bounce it along the bottom on the way back? Having no clicker on it means it's. Of really a live bait reel unless I were to like Carolina it and drift with it in my hands right?

Thanks a lot for the info!

I do tend to go lighter on the tackle when I fish, a bit more challenging to me. I fish the halibut with live bait around the kelp patches, sliding sinker setup. Have caught quite a few BSB fishing for hali's too.
