LJ on the fly
Its been awhile since I tossed or dragged a line at LJ (Work and related travel - another story). Did so Monday AM w/ Tobey, but rather than iron or macks, I tossed and dragged the fly. Did this a bit last year and although a challenge, it has its rewards. Other recent posts noted the eerie lack of kelp, large bait balls and occasional bonito and barries. My line found none-of-the-above, but did manage to attract a nice-sized calico and vermillion rf. Also tantalized something much larger, but we parted ways soon after whatever it was felt the sting of the hook (When fishing the fly, can't fall asleep at the, uh, reel ...). Was reminded that the spinning handle on a 1 to 1 fly reel is none-too-kind to the knuckles when giving line to powerhouse, but it certainly does get the adrenaline pumping. Felt "underdressed" when paddling out w/ one rod and no bait tank, but I think I could get used to it. If there are any other knucklheads out there fishing the fly for YT's, would welcome your input.

Fly fishing the salt
Very cool Avery, it's always fun to try out a new challenge! I have been getting into the fly thing lately myself... The weekend before last we took my 9wt out to the Nine Mile bank while we looked for paddies and YT. Most of the paddies were not holding, but there were a lot of Bonita around. We would troll two 60# trolling rods behind the boat and when we hit a school and a the trolling rods went off (a double hookup every time), two guys would winched the fish in, bringing the school near the boat. The third guy would cast or drop back a fly and each time it was a quick hookup. Those Bonita were my first saltwater fly fish and they were a blast, but like you said, I now have a new appreciation for the term "knuckle buster"... OUCH!!! We had fish up two 7 lbs on the fly... that was the highlight of my day …Later loosing two YT to a paddy was the lowlight of the day :x .
Anyone out there caught a YT on the fly off their kayak? That sounds like a fun challenge! Todd
