whats harder than getting six people lined up for a family portrait?

Getting six lobster lined up for a family pic.

It's easier when they are tailed.

So far it has been a good year from me and the bugs. Last night was the first time yakkin it because I have been hitching a ride on a buddies boat. I am sore as hell this morning, but there is nothing like being out on the water on a yak at night. Just so damned peaceful!

Launched from Shelter Island last night around 5 to get to my usual spot, and when I got there a boat was already there and had put all of his nets in a spot where I only drop one. No worries, went 50 yards to the each side of his hoops, and set my string.

First string produced one keeper, and a bunch of shorts so I was happy to see at least a good crawl. Then the next string they were gone. So on the third pull, I get another keeper, and it seemed I would get one keeper every other pull, with the exception that one hoop had two keepers in it. Around 11 it died down, decided to set them down one more time and just drift hoop to hoop as I was pulling them up. Got my last keeper on that pull.

Even though I got six, I actually caught 7. Biggest bug I have ever caught, but she was a female. I figured that since it has been a while since I caught 6 (back three years now), I would try to appease the lobster gods and throw her back. Hopefully she will hide out past March and lay a whole mess o eggs for us later on.

Started the paddle back in at midnight and I was exhausted! Happy but exhausted!

Thanks for the report BT. Hopefully I'll have some beginners luck when I go tonight.

Ask Sherm how hard it is for me to plan a day in advance to go hoopin. And it is even harder now that my new position at work has me on call every other week 24 hours a day, but I am really on call all the time since it is a new position that I am learning.

When I go out it is usually a night before decision with a chance of cancelation the day off due to work. But I will let you know when I decide to give it a go.
