Slow Jowla Saturday JP
Got to the launch 5:30ish, looks like they did a guick repair job on the launch, still a hole there. Super high tide. Plenty of bait, just no action. Not on bottom, or top bait, Irons, or fish traps. Most everyone I talked to didn't have any action either. Good seeing y'all...

Great day on the water with La Jolla's finest, but no fish. Got to try out my new bait tank, courtesy of Jim at Anglersyakshack. All I can say is...awesome. This pic was taken as I was coming in, 6 hours after making the bait. The 2 dozen baits were happy as clams and as frisky as the moment I caught them. Pity for them that they ended up lobster bait nonetheless. And the internal pump is oh so quiet.

I saved more than $20 today. Took my buddy, Bob, out on his first ever yakfishing trip - figured he was sure to win the JP. After making bait we just paddled and drifted southwest. Bob hooked up on the bottom and couldn't get it to budge. I figure I'm the "expert" so I take the rod from him and rip and tug and wrangle with it ... until my squid-greased hand let the rod slip away and shoot straight down to the bottom. ops: Crap! Fairly new Saltist reel, spectra backed, and a Blue Water rod. Probably a $200+ donation.
30 seconds later my buddy is hooked on the bottom AGAIN! And can't get it to budge. This time with his bait rod. I know by now that I'm not the expert, but once again take the rod from him. I rip and tug and wrangle with it and finally start gaining some line. And more line. Then the bait fish. And some spectra. And more spectra. And a Blue Water rod. And a Saltist reel .... No fish, but a good experience with firends. Good to see/hear everyone out on the water today. |

Wow Arne, sometimes tangled lines are good.
Brad, very nice tank setup. I was looking at doing something similar in another kayak. I have 3-4 gallon dry hatch, but I can't access it from inside. It's positioned behind a bulkhead. I would require lots of cutting and glass repair, but probably worth it in the end. |

Oh, man... Nice you got your set up back, Arne.

Nice second snag Arne, that's awesome you got the reel & rod back. Disappointing to hear the calm that was LJ, I'll be giving it a shot manana and hopefully can happen upon something. I'm bringing my bass rods in case the kelp ends up being a viable alternative...

Arne, You are GOLD! That is awesome, better than a fish in my book .
I think rather than giving back the jackpot. If nobody has caught the right kind by the deadline. There should be a dash for the cash. From the yellowcan first one to pull up any fish.

Seeing as how there were macs all over the can, that wouldn't have been too exciting. Better this way, though everybody should have to re-ante. Like a game of GUTS.

My lack of sleep from Thursdays bugging adventure had me blissfully dozing. 8)
While launching at 8:00 I got the on the water fish report from Art..........NADA! To the south/west was a misty fog- To the east a glassy palm view- As I paddled out, all I talked to gave the same report...........SLOW! Around 10:00 the north-west wind started to blow. My plans to explore the three mile corner soon waned. I decided to seek the refuge of the kelps and the consolation prize of a checkerboard or longshot croaker. I caught a few of the first but none of the latter. Enjoyed, as always the company of the dolphins- I threw in the towel and landed in the buttercup surf, at a very low new-moon-tide. I decided to cruse Prospect Street. I always enjoy this drive, for it's panoramic/oceanic view. As I passed the museum my attention was ripped from the ocean vista by this- WFT, the first thought that came to my mind was Avenida del la Playa on a warm summer afternoon!! Cool sculpture! Ken |

Wow, was it dead!! I fished on my new Hobie Adventure from 6:30 to 3:30 pm ......... everything, even the calicos had lockjaw today.
I managed one small ling on plastic, and, smelt for bait. That was it. Lots of play time on the water to check out and play on the new rig. By 2 pm there were whitecaps washing over both front and rear hatches outside in my rough water test.

Sunrise only was worth it. LJ morning rocket launching:
When we started loading up on those perfect greenies right by the reserve line, I thought today was going to be DA day. Thick fog strolled in 8:00, misty stuff on Ken’s pic. One on those days when everything disappears except a white dot (sun) and a boat next to ya’. It was gone by 9:00am. Awesome. Makes you love your GPS/compass though. My buddy was out, with nothing but cell phone. We were close. We worked it hard, paddled a lot, drifted some. Slim. On our way back in, I talked to a dive boat, they were on the inside. They said very clear, but ghostown. I told them a couple of us had 3 each…. as they mentioned they were L.A. spear-fishermen. Just kiddin’. The gosts are being talked about, that’s for sure. The current was there. Water pretty clear. Murky is what should light it up.

Ken your write up had us laughing, especially the artwork a-la the launch in summertime.
Arne, what numbers should we get in the next lotto? Maybe you should be called Diamond Jim Arne. Gold doesn't cut it anymore. Retrieving that outfit had to make that sinking feeling go away from just moments before. Sorry to hear fishing still sucks at La Jolla .

Hah! Now THAT'S the kind of picture that keeps me from taking myself too seriously. Kind of like the old highschool year book pics.
I sure look proud of that 22# YT, don't I? |
