La Jolla 10-6 (Lost Rod)
Took the tandem rental from OEX with the lady, successfully launched from the surf (this is only our 2nd time kayaking but this time we brought our fishing gear). After launching, we headed out of the marine reserve towards the first kelp forests.
After around 30 minutes of paddling we stopped to rig up our gear. While rigging it up, it was then we started getting motion sickness did not expect that at all as we were both well experienced with boating, but not of this size.... Soon after i was forced to lay on my back as it got worse. The lady landed one small sole which was infested with parasite amphipods...absolutely disgusting but sad. Then it happened, my rod slipped from behind me and before i knew it was too deep to retrieve..... Now I know there are some divers in the area, so if at all possible, I would GREATLY appreciate it if someone could notify me if they happened to pick it up. The rod is a Shimano Sojourn 2 piece rod med-light action. The reel is a Shimano Saros 3000. I'm not even sure if its saveable or accessible by divers, but due to its sentimental value as being my first saltwater set up, i thought i would try posting here. Thanks to all of you and tight lines- Jin |

Sounds like a tough trip.
It was a pretty hilly weekend to be on the water - I'm sure that contributed to your queasiness. If I may offer one bit of advice for next time...Pre-rig your gear or at least tie your knots at eye level and not staring down into your lap....that's what usually will get ya. Good luck and good job getting the lady out with you. |

Thanks for the tip Dan.
Can I ask what good motion sickness medications we can take? We initially didn't prerig the gear as we were worried of losing gear through launching and landing. However this time around I handled both launch and landing perfectly (the only highlight of the trip ) As for the approximate location of the Rod: Using Google Earth this is the place I came up with: 32°51'39.08"N 117°16'2.58"W http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/4306/lostrodiz1.jpg I know its still a LONG shot...but if anyone happens to be diving the area already please keep an eye out for me. |

Jin,
Sorry to be a weenie, welcome to the board . I think there would only be a few exceptions of people that have not donated a rod or something else expensive to La Jolla. Dan was right, pre-rig rods to avoid sea sickness. I also take a half dose of non drowsy dramamine the night before I go out. I find that if I take it the night before, it does not make me feel like a zombie as bad. Bonnie and the generic also works. I think it is all the same stuff- Meclizine HCL 25mg. Sometimes I will get some raw ginger and munch on it on the drive down to the shores, I know other guys like the candied ginger. Avoid greasy foods too. Last but not least, make or buy a rod leash and use it. Here is one http://www.kayakfishingsupplies.com/...eash-BF/Detail Good luck, have fun out there. Steve |
