Sunday LJ am
Short version....went to LJ looking for YT and accidentally caught a nice flattie.
Longer version......Met up with my wingman in the early am at the shores of La Jolla. There was absolutely no surf to contend with and we were on the water at grey light. The plan was to make bait and look to see if we could find the YT. The fishing was slow. We made some bait. Even the bait was no where to be seen. Very few mac's to troll around. The water was warm and clear and the wind was still. Everything was very nice except the fishing. I found a nice spot with fish on the meter and sent down a bait. Still nothing wanted the mac so I sent down an iron to jig the bottom. BENDO.......and the jig fish is on. I quickly realized it was not a YT by the way it was fighting. Thought maybe a nice ling or something. I got it to the surface and a nice flattie gets a gaff through it's skull at yak side. I thought I brained the fish with the gaff shot....no movement out of him at all. I put the game clip on him and still no movement. Then I pulled the gaff out of its head and it went ape s@#%. I got a few gills out of him and he finally sucumbed. Jim and I looked around for a couple more hours with no success. Jim did catch a small shark that gave him something to pull on. Landed at the beach to again no surf. I've had worse days landing in the bay than yesterday at LJ shores. We'll get em next time Jim. I got home and cooked the halibut in a little garlic/jalepeno butter topped it with parmesan cheese, lemon zest and cilantro. It turned out pretty good. |

Not sure.....it's some light weight carbon fiber paddle I got down at OEX in Point Loma. It says "bending branches angler" on the paddle blades. All I know is it's ultra light weight and durable. It's really worth it's price on those long outtings on the yak. When you've been hooping from midnight till sun-up and then fish grey light till noon......it makes the long paddle back a lot easier. It's been worth every penny. |
