West Aussie Adventure's 3: Matt's Patch.

Well the alarm went off at 5am Sunday morning, and i looked at wifey, she looked at me, and we both said, "we gotta be frikken crazy ", back to snooze, but alas, we got up, got ready and were down on the road to the launch area at 6am when the mobile rang. "Heya guys, it's Matt, i'm ready to roll, where are you guys". Struth Matt, you're keen!!

So we were into it, launched at Woodies, on a pearler of a Sunday morning, feeling a wee bit worse for wear after some clown stocked the esky with VB for a friends 21st, crazy. But on this particular morning, the view alone, cloudless sky, just post-full moon, no wind and a gentle 3m swell made getting up all the worth while.

Wifey, on-route.

The new GPS was put to work, and we headed to one of my marks, just a short 2-3km trip out from Woodies. Located the ground we were after and anchored up. Matty dropped a berly bomb, and i started dropping some loose attractant, and we got down to it.

Matt on the Gizmo.

Since turning to Kayak Fishing, i've struggled a bit with techniques, so today i was trying some soft plastics. The Gulp's were the go, and soon i was hooking into some decent sized Herring, and the yells from wifey were indicating she was also! Soon enough i had a good size fillet bait out, and a few spares in the esky for l'ron.

What a mug..

Anyways, the serenity of the morning was shattered by a screaming ratchet, and Matt's call, "I'm ON!!" And he was by jove, thumping headshakes the tell-tale signs of a good Snapper on the line.

The concentration was etched on his face as he worked the beast back to the yak, and then it broke the surface, OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!! What a ripper!!! This is what its all about, a shimmering Pinky of substantial proportions was thrashing on the surface, as Matty skillfully scoops it up with the net and lands it!

What a beauty! First big Snapper i've seen caught from a Yak, and Matty's first Pinky!! We are both yipping and yahhoo'ing by this stage as a problem comes to light. Where the hell on 9' of Finn Gizmo is he gonna store this thing! So , Brett to the rescue, i drop the anchor rope and he dumps it in my fore-hatch, and wer'e back into it.

So with the front of the Adventure 3" deeper in the water we get back into the fishing. Matty soon lands another good sized snapper, and i'm starting to get a bit toey, when im kicked in the a$$ by the sound of my ratchet screaming!! I grab it and strike; OH NOES!!!
I think i've yanked the entire jaw bone out of a decent snapper, but alas, i loose it. Another 30mins pass and we decide to call it a day. We pull up lines, and wattya know, Matty's on again!! This creature of the deep pulls the little Finn in a full 360 before he lands another decent Pinky!! Struth Matt, we should name this patch after you! And hence, so it is know known as Matty's Patch.

All in all, another beautiful day on the water, and some great company along the way. Me and wifey hooked a heap of Herring, and i lost a good fish, and again learnt some invaluable lessons for next time. Congrats to Matt for some great fishing, and that one ripper Red in particular that went 80cm, and two over the 50cm mark. And thanks mate for giving us one of the smaller ones, its gonna give us a great feed tonight!

Matt's three Pinky's.

Proud Fisherman, with a ripper Red.

Thanks to Matt for proving to be a reliable fishing buddy, and to wifey for putting up with us both yelling like crazy men across the sound at the sign of a good fish. The addition of a good GPS to my kit has proved itself worth on the first trip, and certainly looks to be worth every cent i spent on it. The Yak, Shufoy is really starting to become the mini-fishing boat i want it to be, with all the mod-cons. And hopefully i can get a few runs on the board soon, even tho without them, i'm still loving it.

Oh for next time, im trying a new "Sea-Weed-Camo Look". I'll let you know how it goes!

Great story, beautiful big snapper!!!
I fished for them a lot in Adriatic Sea...

That fish is tasty.

They love mussels down there.
