Nice day at DP 8/15

Busy day at Dana Point today! Started out kind of crappy. Got a late start. FF wouldn't stay on. Livewell was acting up. Boat traffic was crazy. But I stuck to the plan anyway and went out off the point north of the buoy. Water temps (according to my buddy) were 70-71. Almost no wind or current most of the morning. Water was nice and clear. Calico were biting immediately on the first go. Ended up with a fun variety of fish and my buddy even ended up with a WSB that was just under size. Watched it hook up 10 feet under my kayak so that was cool. Lots of bites that didn't stick. A few really good ones too. Cormorants were out in force today though. Any time they came by, I swapped from live sardines to drifting frozen squid since the birds only wanted my fish and couldn't care less about squid.

Totals
Calico: 20+ (biggest was 17" today)
Bonita: 4
Barracuda: 4
Jumbo Macs: Too many

My buddy
Calico: A bunch
Bonita: A couple
Barracuda: A few
Cormorant: 2
Rock structure: 1
WSB: 1

Everything was catch and release

It’s good to see that you picked up a nice variety up off the point. Nice Calico!
The water was warm today but there wasn’t much of a tide swing.

We went straight out to the pipe and barber poles
And a few reefs in between for pretty much of a nonexistent bite. We had less than a handful of bass between two guys but you could see lots of fish all over the water column. We’ll see what next week brings.

Thanks! As long as I'm not getting run over by a boat, it's always a fun day out lol

That is by far the greatest concern every time I go offshore kayak fishing.

Thanks, and thanks for the pipe report. Rewired my FF, so I'll be back out on Saturday again! Most likely at the point by the buoy or in the kelp up north. Maybe I'll see you out there
