Live Mappin' - Sonar
I got into a black hole today researching the new fish finder technology. I believe it's is called Live Mapping by Genesis. Not sure if each company has their own version. But this one's in the Lowrance units, it's where you can compose your own charts with side-scan sonar data logged from your fish finder.
https://www.genesismaps.com/HowItWorks/Faq The tech looks fine and dandy, but does anyone have any hands on experience with it? Is it really worth dishing out extra cash to upgrade to one of the newer units? How detailed are the charts it creates? I'm intrigued at building some detailed maps of my favorite fishing holes. I believe the cheapest I have been able to find is around 850-900$ for a 7" unit compatible with it.

think it makes more sense in a power boat where you will more easily cover a good sized area to build the mapping.

I have considered getting that. Some of the areas I fish have a lot of structure I would love to be able to map.

I guess, but we cover plenty of ground on kayaks and my pain point is base maps are ballparks on what the topography of the ocean looks like. Knowing the exact breaks between reef and sand could be deadly for targeting halibut for example. I'm just trying to gauge how much more detailed and how accurate these Live Maps are. Looking at the online Navionics Sonar Chart it shows depth lines but not really areas of rocks nor reefs at least in the areas I fish. Anyone know how much more detail they provide in comparison to base maps?

Ask NavionicsSpecJason. He posts mostly on the bass board.
