Sunday 1/20/19 LJ Yellowtail
Launched at the shores in the dark. Tide almost high enough to launch from the road.
Made bait (macks) on the edge of the kelp. Paddled around The Bump and was about halfway to The Corner when I detoured west a bit to see some whales. Then decided “screw it, today I’m going to go see what The 32 looks like.” That was a waste. Underwater topography not very exciting and no fish marks. Started the long peddle back. Cut the corner off The Bump and was heading across the plateau, about 70’ deep. By this stage it was after noon and had lost a couple of bait to the dogs and had no hits on the shimano flatfall. Zzz! Zzz! Zzzzzzzzz! My trolled live bait went off. I grabbed it and felt strong jerks and assumed another dog. P’ed off I started pulling, taking out my frustration on the dog. Weirdly it wasn’t coming up for air. Then I felt scraping and a pop then slack. But it was still on. That repeated for a couple of minutes as I cut/popped through kelp. Then I was excited and determined to see what I had so I muscled it up and this is what popped up 35.5 pounds, my personal best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Congrats. SWEEEEEET! It's been too many months, since I've seen a really nice Home-guard Yellow like that. Enjoy!

Thanks. My previous YT was caught on 1/27/2018, almost exactly a year ago and a whole year of nothing, so never give up

I’m not due for another until next year, or perhaps even the next Super Blood Wolf Moon, but I’m going to try anyway

I hit it today, seeing as the surf was foreast to be below 3' and the wind about 7-8mph until noon. Launched around 6:40 and landed around 2:30. Found bait near the kelp and started trolling a green back and the sabiki trying for more bait. went out to 110' and headed south. The water surface and sun were fantastic, but the bite just never came. Switched out macs for better swimming presentation, but none attracted the Yellow I was looking for. Finally on the way back the wind did come up (seemed higher than the 17 mph forecast) and the larger swell and wind generated white caps made a fun trip back from the south. So finally when a dog stole the mac I was trolling, I decided I could make better time against wind and current without trolling a mac. I though the forecast was off and it was going to remain super glassy. Should have known, I have made that same trip many times, it's best to plan on using the wind or current to aid the return trip. Sometimes you just can't help yourself when all you can think about it getting another 30+lb Yellow. Next trip.
