Cabrillo 6/16/18
Nice and calm launch with 1/2 foot gentle rollers. Dolphins feeding right off the beach. Bait everywhere.
The water is warming up 65-67 surface temp. Lots of small barracuda but they were pretty shy. They would follow to the boat but only three hook ups. Mack's everywhere. One very pretty 2-3 inch short WSB. I couldn't find any Calico's.. Wind picked up around 2-2:30 so I cut my day short. Then this happened on the way in.. Two broken fishing poles and the leash for my pedals broke. Luckily the leash was floating so I found the pedals fairly quickly. |

A 2-3 inch wsb is pretty small. How small was your hook and bait?

Yes I launched on the surf side of Cabrillo and after paddling back from Angel's gate once a few weeks ago with a decent head wind I will never do that again. Through the surf for me.
One was in the rear holder one was in the front on the same side. Both of the longer rods got broken. I had a shorter rod I use to make bait and it was fine in the rear holder. I think for my next landing I am going to stow the rods in horizontal position to avoid this in the future. I am not sure how I am going to strap them in but they will not be sticking out to catch the sand if I capsize. WSB was 2-3 inches short of legal (~25-26 inches long). |

If landing is sketchy, take ur reels off ur rods and put them inside a dry bag, then store your rods, horizontal where the paddle goes and strap it with the bungee, still having ur rods leashed just in case. Have the paddle in your hand anyways during landing. I’ve done this a couple times and go back in worry free.

the outback
has the ability to store the rods assembled, its a tight squeeze. you might even pull the gasket of the front hatch . but, it can be done. the outback is very stable, and pulling the rods / reels assembled from front hatch on open water is achievable. welcome aboard recruit. tighten it up.
