2018 Mission Bay Classic Results - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Most importantly we raised over $8000 in entry and raffle ticket sales. Eric N and the Geo Group have continued the tradition of adding a very generous $5000 to that total. That is over $13,000 in funding for the So Cal Chapter of Heroes On The Water.

We had 147 entries this year!

Top 3 in the bass division were awarded trophies and prizes and here are the total standings and weights

3rd Brian Loydd (The Lifeguard Guy) one of the pioneers of old
4th Cameron Chang
5th Glenn Fraser

No Halibut division this year? Or did just no one catch a legal to weigh in?

the only legal sized halibut reported was an incidental catch by a bass fisherman.....he got the trophy, but the prizes went into the raffle.

I was all set ready to go to Mission Bay to fish in the tournament and had my rods and reels in the car the night before. All I had left to do was to put the kayak on the roof. Turns out that trying to save a little bit of time wasn't the smartest thing to do as someone broke a window to get into my car. It must not have been a fisherman though, as they left the rods and reels alone. Instead of driving down and going fishing with everyone, I spent the day getting the window fixed. I won't do that again.....

Sorry I missed it this year, sounds like everyone had a good time.

Next year for sure!

Baja Sauce

Love this stuff crema, mayo, cumin, adobo peppers and sauce, lime juice, lime zest and sea salt. stick it in the food processor.

Sucks man! I had done the same thing once and never again. Lost 2 rods and tackle box. Thought loading the night before would save me 30 min or so with in 4 hours from when I had to wake up I stepped into a car with the window busted.

It was shear stupidity and I should have known better than to leave my gear out in plain sight. The doors were locked, the car alarm was on, so I was lulled into a false sense of security. Make that insecurity now. You're right, it sucks, but I learned a valuable lesson. I won't be doing that again anytime soon.

As for coming down the night before, that's something that I might have to consider for next year.

Biggest Bass

Had a great time and it was a great event and successful fundraiser. I just wanted to point out that I believe I caught the biggest calico of the day at 4.51 pounds. Unfortunately it was caught outside the bay, with live bait, and I was in the halibut division. I’ll try again next year for halibut. Somebody has to get one next year!

No Halibut - but it was not for lack of trying! A bunch of us launched at 4am - some went out the jetty and turned left and some turned right. I started bounce balling at the Ingraham Street bridge and peddled 12.6 miles in total - took me all the way to Crystal pier just outside the surf zone, then out to the Yukon wreck then south varying between 100 feet of water to 60 feet of water. Then back in through the jetties where boat traffic and tons of seaweed forced me to reel it all in and give up.
Felt like a total failure peddling in, but felt much better when I learned that nobody caught a halibut in the division - even the guys drifting live bait.

Highlight of the day was watching a calf and mother grey whale with another escort pass in front of me just outside the jetties.

I'll try again next year though!
