Mission Bay harbor the dreaded W Swll
Just a story from OKFD Perspective: (read when your bored nothing fancy here)Tournament into the void
We waited anxiously all week, and the day finally came to pack up and leave. We packed up the car, trailer, and off we went to spend the night at Mission Bay San Diego for an early launch time of 4am. We had a lot to live up to, since we were up against Team Sewer and my X Fishing buddy. So we tried to get as much sleep as possible, I think it was a total of 15 mins of good sleep. So anyways 4 am was here and off we went... OKFD Team: Jessie, John, and Frank All three of us launched into what we knew was going to be some sick swells that were calming down through out the afternoon. John had fished this same waters and he had warned me that the mouth of Mission Bay harbor can be dangerous under the right swell conditions. Off we went navigating in dark water under a moonlit sky. After getting a tank full of live bait, I felt the waters were unsteady. "FORWARD!" I yell to the guys.... As we get a quarter way though the harbor entrance I start seeing what was 3-5ft surf crashing into the sides of the harbor from the inside of the harbor.... I said to myself.... "That's not a good sign" "FORWARD!" We keep going... We start feeling what are suppose to be 4ft 9 sec swells.... "FORWARD! " John yells... Stay in the middle of the harbor or the surf will take us down... We are all huddling in the middle of the harbor... Time 4:16am "Forward".... As we are on the last stretch of leaving the harbor.... We see what is the biggest swell I have EVER Seen in my kayak Life!!! I don't know if it was amplified because of the harbor entrance... But this thing must of been like a 9ft swell or that what it felt like... When I saw this thing..." I said this swell better not crest because the sides of it were cresting ." I Hold on to my PA Seat and my rudder line... And peddle as hard as I can... John and Jessie... I hear on the back STAY IN THE MIDDLE HOLD ON!!! I feel all my macho man feeling leave me behind.. I have to admit I was little big scared when I saw this huge swell... That swell lifted us so high we must of dropped like 4 ft unto another swell right behind it.... As soon as we cleared the harbor entrance is was SOOOOO much better....Nothing Like that dreaded harbor entrance... We fish wreck after wreck. And there I saw them... The dreaded TEAM SEWER... They were fishing hard too... That only pumped me up even more...... I fished zig zags, crosses. Circles, tic tac tow.... AND NOT ONE SINGLE BITE>.. ARG!!!!!!!!! Wreck after wreck ! Reef after Reef.... We ended up as far north as the La jolla MLPA line... We saw the big fish marks,, but it was not meant to be... They didn't want to take the live bait that we made or the bait that we bought.... 10am we had some breakfast ham and cheese sandwiches to rejuvenate our stamina 10:30am came by and that was it, we had to make the long peddle back to the harbor to make it back by 1pm... It was around 12pm when I made it back to the harbor.... And I was pumping.... My plan was to fish under the bridge... For my last hope of a halibut..... Half way down the harbor entrance.... I catch a glimpse of my dreaded arch RIVAL... AS he pedals near me... I tell myself!!! He is going to add Salt to my injury by showing off his HUGE HALIBUT. So I sneak a little view unto his kayak... And I don't see nothing.... So I fall behind to make sure his halibut is not in the water.... And nothing on either side.... (sign of relief) so I guess we all had the same idea... And everyone starts fishing for any last minute attempts under the bridge.... ALL FOR NOTHING!!!! We arrive at the launch... WITH NOTHING!!!!!!!!!! The end.

Good story, I think we all can guess who your dreaded archrival is.
The bass fishing inside wasn't much better. Did anyone have their GoPro on while exiting the harbor? I'd like to see that. |

Right on Frank. I had plans to head outside but then I got to about 100 yards from the exit of the harbor mouth and turned around to fish the harbor. There were quite a few bigger swells crashing on the rocks and I got worried about coming back in.. I hate big swells pushing me in, I almost broached my old kayak on a swell and took a swim 2 miles from the harbor once, and I still get flashbacks

Launched around 4:30am and headed out after picking up a scoop at the bait barge. Brian and I went south for OB and drifted from the jetty down past the pier and near the kelp. Had a chunkie calico bycatch on the bottom and a bunch of rake marks (no trap hook) all around 65 ft.
It can get a little chaotic coming in/out of the bay, but thankfully boat traffic wasn't too bad and the tides weren't going against us. |

So did anyone catch fish? All the news I heard is that the bite was dead on the inside and outside!

Ya the jetty was a little hairy on Saturday. I got some video of it... but the video always makes it look smaller than it really was.
We had lots of good marks up the beach inside of you, but no biters. Was was cooling all morning, upwelling. |
