San Diego 5 day adventure
After retiring the first of December I did not know that your first check took 2 months to arrive, which keep me off the water all but the San Diego Angler Tournament and the opening SWBA event at Newport. Friday my first check arrived so I headed to Newport Beach to pick up my new Ocean Kayak Caper from Paddle Power.
Took it out Friday night at Newport with Amish Ed for hours of frustration with the red tide and 1 small spottie. Saturday morning headed to San Diego on a mission. Launched at South Shores and headed to Hubbs area. Stopped along the way and the first cast hookup!!! Sunday I went to Bahia Point to fish the MBF. Great day seeing all my friends and putting in some more time on the water and support Paul in his hard work on the MLPA. Started the day by fishing my way arround Sail Bay for a few fish and to strech the paddle musceles to get ready for La Jolla Monday and Tuesday. At 10:30 headed into my favorite cove and staarted working the north end of the moored boats. In 40 minutes I boated 10 spotties 1 short the rest over 13" the biggest going 1.75 at the weight in. ( Sorry no picks )Used Reebs Razor Backs smothered in Uni Butter, 6"lugs and Spinner baits. Great BBQ and gathering. Overslept Monday and didn't get to La Jolla till 6:30. No swell beautiful sunny warm day no bites. On Tuesday got the early start even though there was a light fog in Mission Bay headed to La Jolla. It was still dark when I launched into small waves though the fog bank was about 2 miles out to see. By 9:00 Fished another 15 minutes with only one knock down on the dead stick and finding myself alone with my GPS safely sitting at home I picked a direction cross swell and started paddling to wha I hoped was shore. Afer what seemed like 45 minutes in the fog I saw 2 shapes ahead in the fog. Feeling relief that I had found 2 other kayakers I looked at the FF to find 17 feet of water under me, not kayakers surfers. Hoping I was right made a right turn and headed south along the beach. Even though I could see the surfers i could not see the beach. After about 100 yards I saw what looked like cliffs so headed in closer to shore, not cliffs but the hotels that bracket the launch area. DON'T EVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR GPS On Wednsday morning took the Caper out at Mission Bay for 1 1/2 hr San Diego wrap session Great Morning again plastics smothered in Uni Butter and the good old blade. Great trip next ime maybe La Jolla will show me some love
