Reading the current and wind
I'm fairly new to the forum and yak fishing. Thanks for posting great info and helping a rookie like me out!!! I have a 4 hour drive to get to LJ and, for obvious reasons want to make sure I can get on the water if possible. Nothing is ever perfect, especially when it comes to weather predictions, but how about reading current, wind and tides. Do you guys have any pointers on what to look for? What to avoid? Thanks in advance!!

This should help you out before you drive all the way down here.

And at the home page is a Web camera of lj launch.
A plan b: fishing a harbor or a bay may be needed to salvage a trip. |

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Spoke to a Hobie dealer in Morro Bay and he said A couple of Kayakers went out of San Simeon in the Fall and didn't pay attention to the Tide, Wind and current. Pushed them 6 miles off shore until there were able to tie off to some kelp. They got a ride home with the Coast Guard. Thanks again!!

I go with the coastal data information program of of schripps. Www.cdip.org
And the NOAA predictions. And like danaPT said, have a plan B. Bring some bay stuff for Mission or SD. Or For some thing different you could drop the $10 and fish bass at lake Murray. Won't have to rinse your gear. Lol. Mike |

I always take light bay Rod when I go down to la jolla for just in case. My drive is not as bad as yours (2hrs) but still quite a long drive. Last time when I went to la jolla with my buddy, weather forecast was good and surf wasn't supposed to be too high but when I got to the launch the wind was howling and white caps all over so I headed to mission bay for some bass action.
