Left YT Biting

Got tired of trolling La Jolla for little more than a bucket
of mackerel and some exercise, so decided to go south
to my favorite Yellowtail spot.

Tuesday, the the wind was light, the seas calm and the sun warm.
After loading up on a variety of mackerel, paddled to my yellowtail
hole...

Before I could even have time to lock down my paddle, my flylined
mega-mac was chirping, then singing - loudly...

I was thinking a monster, since the bait was so large. After a
nice struggle, I ended up with a YT of just over 9lbs. I surely
thought it would go bigger than that.

Flylined another mac and moments later, I was on again. And again.
And again...

...this went on until Dave and I ran out of bait. It was the first time that
voluntarily released yellows. I only wanted 2 big ones for BWE
entries, so I let the little guys go.

On Wednesday, it was the same story. I won't expound on my frustration
of not having a bait tank (still bailing the bucket), but I found myself
with lots of dying bait as well as loosing several yellows to bottom
structure on both days.

My biggest frustration came when my largest that day, estimated
at 15lbs. or greater, was lost at the gaff because I forgot to
take off the protective shield on the gaff. As I went to gaff him,
it bounced off the YT side and he twisted off the hook and swam
away. I think they heard me yell in Cabo...

Dave will tell his story, but I stayed out longer than he did on Wednesday,
going back 2 more times to get more bait. On that day I pulled in
10 yellows, releasing 6. I also lost 3 to popped lines.

Thursday morning was a day with a mission, given the action we
saw the days before. Unfortunately, I had lots of problems with
lost baits. I believe they were bonito stealing my bait, as there we
several large bonito boils.

After struggling and loosing 9 baits to broken lines and lost hook ups,
I ended up with just 2 yellows, including this 11lb. 10oz. yellow.

Definitely a great day on the water. Over the 3 days, I brought
in 17 YTs. Left them biting on all three days...

Had a great time with the Wavster. It was non stop action all three days. A very challenging spot to fish, mostly off the reefs with rocky structures around. You had to stop the fish before it got into the rocks, about 25 feet in depht. So many yellows. It was hard to get the bigger ones cause of all the 10 to 16#ers around. I got lucky and brought in one 35lber.

Abreojos is special. Only been there once, flew in and landed on the salt strip, but what a place! Estereo de Coyote is an awesome place to fish and explore, but so hard to get to. If your nervous about venturing off the beaten path in Baja, this place is far from the main road, and probably a little intimidating. That being said, it is probably the truest example of how Baja used to be.
