7/26 Carlsbad Yellowtail

Decided to stay close to home and fish the local water. Headed out about 7:00 am Sunday crashing through a few small waves with no problem and make my way over to the kelp line. Made about 10 pieces in about 15 minutes and off I go.

Headed WSW and could see life pretty quickly. A whale makes an appearance and then birds landing on the spot where the whale just surfaced but nothing happening there. Then dolphins make an appearance they seemed happy making a couple of full breach leaps and an occasional burst of speed but again nothing happening.

After about two hours of searching I decided to head back in to work the kelp line. The sun pops out and so does the fish. I was approximately 150 yards outside the kelp line when my troller gets hammered. I worked the fish for about 30 minutes, or it worked me because it hits on my light line (12lb.) and listening to the pling, pling, pling of the line I know I was pushing the limit. Finally getting it to surface with a pile of kelp attached I land MY FIRST YELLOW on the yak.

Off the water and home by noon.

Here is an edited clip of the action. Video take from my GAFFER HD Video Polarized Sunglasses w/ bluetooth connection for music. These glasses are awesome! The video isn't as great as the GoPro but for $139.00 it is an exceptional product.

Way to get it done, and I think those glasses are very cool. Very practical way to shoot video.

12lb test. Impressive. I wouldn't be caught dead with that. Especially around kelp. But u made it happen. Great job!

I think it is great that you caught it on 12 lb. line but the question is why did you use 12 lb. line? Did you have other setups that were heavier? Is it your bass rod?

@Dirty Curti: Well done & congrats on the first yellow - awesome catch!!!

I surf the area a lot and there always seems to be a swell. Where did you launch from...the jetties? How was the takeoff/landing?

Thanks and congrat's again!!!

Yes I take 3 rods with me. My sibiki rod, the 12 lb. for fishing calico's & a 20 lb for the yellows.

I already had the light rig ready to go so I just pinned one on it and sent it out and then was going to rig the 20 lb later. I just didn't get to that point yet.

Launched between the jetties in front of the lifeguard tower. I waited for about 15 minutes for the right time and charged it. Crashed through a couple of small breakers and got a little wet but charged on with no problem. Had to land about 25 yards south of the jetties because it was a little calmer there at the time I landed. Waited for the right time and caught a small breaker for the ride in. It all worked out for me...this time!

Since it was my first video I will have to work on my editing abilities and add music. I hope I continue to get that opportunity.

I saw a yaker get stuffed there this morning. Total yard sale. Lot's of lost gear. He looked hurt, had a few people helping him. I hope he's good.
