7/22 Tuna Fishing with Yanni

Yanni and I have logged some miles off Dana Point and La Jolla. Finally we score, such a cool feeling to cross a new species off the list. 73 degree water off Dana Point had the blue fin turning to yellowfin. We launched at 5:30 and passed the parking lot of boats waiting to load up on sardines at the bait barge. Tough bait making but we got a few greenbacks and spanish and headed west.

Only 2 miles out and I got bit and spit. Greenback looked like it had tuna marks on it. Second bait gets picked up by a hammerhead and after he removes the greenback he charges after my bare hook all the way to the kayak. At 3 miles I think I see a boil and get bit again pulling the bait out of the tuna's mouth. Decide to change to the spanish that were a couple inches smaller. We come across a nice little boil of YFT and I toss right into them por nada, see them light up my meter and wait to get picked up, never happened. Moving on at 4 miles we see a boil here and a boil there. I see a couple right behind Yanni and thought for sure he was about to get picked up. Then my clicker goes off. Fun tuna battle on the kayak.........stoked!

Now just need one for Yanni. He gets picked up an hour or so later and gets chewed off. I recommend heading in a mile and trying one more drift. Yanni gets picked up on the slow troll and gets his. Huge hammerhead wants to be Yanni's friend after bleeding and gutting his fish. Perfect day both going in with fish. Pretty sure this is the first time YFT have been caught off the kayak outside of Dana Point. Viva El Nino, can't wait to see what comes our way next.

Congrats Andy & Yanni!
DoDo's next on the list? Just a matter of time (wait 'til August).
Can't wait to see if the Tuna get close enough off the Ventura County Coast, too far out right now.

Nicely done guys. Hard work pays off. What's next Andy? Wahoo? As long as you are tackling these hard jobs, why don't you see what you can do about this ISIS thing or the economy in Greece. Might be easier than your first yak tuna.

Gutting and bleeding a fish while a hammerhead is that close? You have bigger balls than I do sir!

Big time congrats!!!
I know that kept you up at night!

Look at Yani in that pic, wondering how that hammerhead would taste, and what would be the best way to prepare it

Ha ha ha ... that's exactly what I was thinking Adi.
I can just hear Yanni now ... "I'm gonna marinade you"
"I'm gonna throw you over the coals"
"You're gonna taste so good with some greens from my garden"

Classic Yanni!
Cheers.

Haha, after talking to you yesterday, I thought this was a fresh thread! Good motivation to get out there!! I know you guys will get em again this year. Checking out temp break, I see 75 degrees right off oceanside beach right now, so I think I might try my luck there.
