Better than Most
The weekend at LJ for us that is. Had a wild idea to fish an interesting slope/depth on Sat. morning and it paid off both days. Found some really nice structure and associated Rockfish. I saw 6 YT caught on Sat., although that was better than most of the rest of the fleet did. Btw, one of the YT we kept on Sat had a Sanddab in its stomach, and the other a Red Crab. The West swells on both days may have been correct, but they were not reaching the launch. Glad we got our fish early on Sunday and were already headed back when the wind picked up. Most of the fish I saw caught over the weekend were on Iron, although a few did come on Greenbacks. I caught fish in 160' to 200'. Here is a little video I shot.

good job on the YT's. All the one's I've caught have had empty bellies. They're hungry!

Nice Yellows Greg and perfect timing to get the hell out of there before the crazy winds.

Greg, what are you using to film at those depths? I was always afraid that there would not be enough natural light for proper exposure. You always make it look so easy.

Sometimes there is not enough light for good footage, depending on what is in bloom and how much the water has been moving around. I have been out on days where the surface vis was 20+ and the bottom was maybe 5. That makes for some painful reviewing, let me tell you.

Greg,
Nice yellowtails. Especially on your medium rigs!! Fishing those depths is not only fun, but alot of work to boot! Thanks for another looks at La Jolla's bottom. Your videos are just exceptional. |

Greg, have you ever thought about putting red filters on your camera?

Red filters are for very clear water only. There are magenta filters for our greener waters, but they also darken the video some. They are fine for bright days with good visibility to about 80 feet or so. But after that, they are going to make your video too dark to see much of the time. So I just learned to live with green video. I might do some more experimenting with them though, cause they do bring back the colors pretty good.
