Garmin GPSMAP 498 FF - Any Kayak User Reviews??
I'm thinking about getting a Garmin GPSMAP 498 Fishfinder / Chartplotter for the
Trident. Originally, I was going to get another Humminbird 363, but I just found out the unit is currently on backorder. Has anyone had any experiences with Garmin FF/Chartplotters? I'm interested in info on durability, mounting, display... --Dave |

I'm not familiar with that model, I have the Garmin 178C, been very happy with it. Be sure to go with the internal gps antenna if it has that option, one less cable/connector. I bought at West Marine because I've received great service on warranty stuff there, definitely buy the extended warranty, mounted on a kayak is an extreme test of design/reliability.

I have had the GPSMap 178 for a year and have been very happy so far. No problems as of yet and minimal preventive maintenance. I pack the power/xducer connections with dielectric grease and leave them connected most of the time. Helps prevent corrosion on the pin connections. I leave the unit mounted on deck lfor aunching & landing and it has proven to be very waterproof.

Thanks guys. I think this might be another option (instead of the 498).
Garmin seems to make the transducer option confusing. I've always been sold on the internal GPS antenna, but what transducer comes with it? Dual freq or dual beam? Which is better? |
