LJ Yellowtail 7/28
Launched early into knee high waves and no wind. Spent an hour or more trying to make bait near the pier, it was tough for everyone I saw. Finally picked up a decent spanish and a smaller greenback. Paddled over to the fishing grounds and pinned the spanish on the flyline, trolled him around through the floating kelp and grass, it kept getting fouled with grass and I would reel it in and clear the grass several times until it was nearly dead. I only had one more bait so I kept the nearly dead bait out longer than I normally would.... then ZZZzzzzzzz. The yellowtail immediately wrapped around my sabiki line, I was never able to clear it but was able to fight the fish and bring it in for the gaff shot. Matt was photog so I passed him my last bait, his story but both my baits were golden. Fresh hiramasa tonight! 22lb Last Saturday's 32lb from same photog. Thanks again Matt! |

Magical bait
Yep Dave H's bait is magical for sure!!! Went down as a tiny greenback and "BAM!!!" It came back as a 28.5lb yellowtail!! WALLLAAAA!!
Long nasty fight, got down and dirty brought him up to color 3 times before I could finally stick 'em!!! No checklist, just stuck him, backed off my drag, game clipped him, and then ripped his gills!!! About a pound smaller than my other yellow for the month and this one was a male. Dave H thanks again for the bait!! And Gary thanks for the catfood on sunday!! And Dave H. any time you need a photobeyatch just holler! Kurt thanks for the photos!! |

Dave what are you putting on those baits to make them magical? Two big tails on two weekends says you're doing something right. Way to slay them. Gary
