LJ 6-28 am quiet

Launched at 4:45. Bait was pretty consistant on the inside kelp. While making bait, I heard a "boom" in the distance......for the second time in 2 weeks, I saw someone's bait tank catch on fire That was the most exciting part of the day. lol

I think LJ is in a transition mode right now or the full moon is playing games. I'm not surprised about the bait tanks going up in flames! Some of these yaks got more wires in them than a bell helo.lol

He kept paddling like it never happened

The one I saw go up in smoke last week, was a solar powered bait tank. That one sent up a plume of black smoke.

Only thing worse than a fire on a boat is a fire on a plane.

Stick with the exploding kayak story. It will probably be worth a few free beers when you tell it at the bar.

I've never seen that. I've heard of pumps and batteries failing or shorting out but not exploding. Wild.

I suspect it might be more a function of the darn squid. Seems like the big ones are still hanging around.

I haven't seen that one yet, but always worried about it with electricity and salt water and short circuits very likely. I always wonder about internal wiring, you may not notice until it's too late .

I can't think of anything causing an explosion in a kayak electrical system other than getting saltwater into a battery, or, more likely, a short circuit over-heating a battery that is housed in a sealed box or bag. It wouldn't take much heating to pop a waterproof battery bag or a box. You have to keep water out of the battery container and always have a fuse on the battery cable. Any significant heat source on a plastic boat could be a very bad thing.
I guess I should start installing a CO2 flooding system in the electrical distribution compartment on my kayak

You should also drag a dingy behind you in case your boat sinks.

Do you have room ? Come on now, An explosion on a kayak? An explosion does not happen when saltwater comes in contact with a 7amp power source leads, hooked up to a bait tank. This kayak had alot more going on than we know about.lol

If you buy the model kayak that I bought this year you'll always have enough water sloshing around inside the hull so that fire won't ever be a problem!

ok, alright already. It was my kayak that did not explode. Handymansd was right, I was having trouble with my pump working intermitantly. At one point I turned around to check on it and I saw a billow of smoke then flash and fire. I mean a large flame. I did a splash with my paddle twice and it was out. I continued on because there was not enough damage for me to not fish. Should of turned around in hind site. Fishing sucked. On shore I discovered it was the wires that came with the pump that had been repaired over the years and they either shorted or became too weak and couldn't manage the battery? I am using a 12v 7ah rechargeable. My guess it was the old wires. They were completely burn't to the bare wire. This could of been bad. Lessoned learned. Always have good, clean intact wires. Period.

The squid came through fast and furious last night (Wed) around sunset. I was out of bait and using a rapala with enough hooks to keep a squid on. Other guys were getting bit on live bait, but those single hooks will almost never keep a squid on long enough to see it. Earlier, the split-second fights with micro sharks and log cudas kept me retying all afternoon.

That would have been me yelling because I don't think he saw it at first, although the orange glow should have tipped him off!lol. It was a great idea to try and dry off after the wet launch, but I think I will stick to the air drying method for now.

He was just complaining that the pump would go on and off intermittently, and then all of a sudden!

Unfortunately that was about all the excitement I saw today.

Gloom, despair and agony on me. Each dark expression, excessive misery. If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Gloom, despair and agony on me.

I reckon I wasn't the only one having a challenging day out there.
