LJ 6/13 am
I could have swore there was a tourney today... 15-20 kayaks at the launch/otw. Launched at 0515 to 1-2fters. Light onshore, lowtide, water vis. 15, water temp 66. I headed to the pier and picked up some greenies, and horse dines (which later died, you know). Paddled west along the bouy's. I hear some hooting, and this guy is on a thresher... From what I heard he landed it... Anyway, as I rounded the far west bouy, my bait takes off. I reel it in, and a slimelog follows. I head for the kelp and pin on another dine. I hear a big swoosh, looked back and it's right on top of my bait... It takes off, I wait, and I'm on.. short lived. It comes unbuttoned. Oh well.. I paddled over to John(soulwinner), and we BS. We are paddling north, when he say's "There's a shark in front of you." I finally see it, and it's cruising. I paddled along the side of it to try to get an ID. It's about ten feet away, and it gets spooked. I see it go towards my bait, then a quick BBRRAATT... I'm on... After a quick 5 min. I get it to color... It's a pup Mako.. The dogs saw it, but they knew not to mess with it... Self release, unharmed.

There's been a ton of the little toothy terrors around lately. Lost about 2 or 3 hooks each trip to them. Nice pics.

I think that's what I hooked into Sunday night. Tried to stop the unknown fish when it ran for the kelp and broke me off. There were a few others who hooked into them as well.

Nice Mako pics Dennis!
I hooked a Thresher on the PM yesterday, once I saw what it was, thumbed the spool, and popped it off.... |

Killer pics Dennis!!!!!!
I've got some too, from last evening. I screamed like a little girl. As I was fumbling for the camera it rammed the boat and then put on quite a scary boatside display of arials & rolling before it finally broke off.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to work on my camera skills (not fishing skills ). No biting, ramming, or aerials from this little fella... I was lucky

Went out this morning. Knothead is still up to his usual tricks. Seems as though he has a slightly smaller bull doing the same as him as well. Noticed a dead sealion in the kelp that washed ashore at the ramp this morning. Seems as though someone a bit more action oriented got fed up as well....

Great Pic's. It was nice to talk with you out there.
Yes Chris caught the Thresher off the pier. About 75 lbs short and thick. He was pumped, nice kid. The threshers are thick off the pier if one wants to target them. I lost a brand new rapala to one, and kept getting tail whacked on a fish trap while hanging out untill Chris landed his. He wanted company and I can't blame him. My day ws slow on the mac's but on my way back in around 1:00 went to a 4.5 Inch green flake fish trap and picked up 4 Calico's to 3lbs and 3 nice Cuda's in about an hour. |
