First time with the wife
... Kayak fishing that is
Will head to LJ tomorrow after dropping kids to school. I'm hoping to catch something good ... I have a good feeling about this (usually this means I'm going to get skunked) hopefully not tomorrow. Here is my plan of action: Paddle past the buoy and troll a big hammer swim bait. Monitor the FF for bait fish and grab a few with a sabiki rod Anchor by the edge of a kelp bed and soak squid/lures/live bait Anyone with tips on techniques or good spots please feel free to help a newbie. Unless you have braid (spectra) line I would soak my bait a little ways off of the edge of the kelp, maybe 90-100 ft depth. Its really hard to land a big fish with mono in the kelp. Spectra will cut through the kelp strands easily.

Good thing you started out explaining your self. That title was leaving you open for a lot funny posts. Sound like you got a good plan. At the very least you should end up with some rock fish with the squid on the bottom. If you get really lucky, fly lining a mac you might get a Home Guard as a few guys have recently. Hope the wife brings you good luck. The only way to know is to spend time out on the water. Tight Lines

Thank you Chris:
I do have 50# braid with a fluoro leader. Should I use braid all the way without the fluoro if I'm close to kelp? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

By anchor, do you mean a conventional anchor?
If you are on a tandem I don't recommend an anchor. They don't play nice with two people and their different senses of balance. Let one person fish while the other paddles to keep you in the spot. |

And to answer your question about the braid/floro, yes use a floro leader. 30- 40#

Thank you all for the anchor tips. I will not use it in tandem mode any longer.

I think you can minimize anchor problems by always having a bungie type attachment point to your kayak, and making sure the anchor rope is attached to either the furthest bow or stern as possible, never to either side of the yak.

It got pretty swelly out there, good call on avoiding the anchor. Pass on the big hammer and try a Rapala, if you're lucky you may get a thresher shark.

Invest the time in making a kelp clip or invest the $$ and buy one.

Save your money..... Don't waste it on a kelp clip. Just grab a piece of kelp and wrap it around your foot once or twice. Easy and free!

I like having a kelp clip, they work great. And you can use it to attach to a cleat on a dock too.
