Fish ID please?
Caught like two dozen on these little guys today. They look like a weird Calico/Whitefish Hybrid

Same thing. Johny Bass is just a local name for Olive Rockfish. Olive rockfish are really thick up North where they come up into the kelp and tend to school up with Blue Rockfish or Blue bass. I've caught some local deep but they are thick as flies up North around Mendocino.
Found a great pic: The fish in front on the lower left are Olive Rockfish the ones behind them and above them to the right with the speckles are Blue bass or Blue rockfish. Love that picture that would be wide open fishing with Iron. Last edited by Fiskadoro; 11-26-2013 at 10:57 PM. |

Yeah I'm still not completely convinced. Olives vary in color dark to light depending on where they are living just like Calico bass. You obviously wrestled that one right out of it's cave. Last edited by Fiskadoro; 11-26-2013 at 11:32 PM. |

I'm sticking with Olive Rockfish.
Yellowtail rockfish have less rays in the back lower anal fin, and they also have yellow orange speckles. People often confuse them especially in pics taken underwater because the water color mutes out the specks but since it out of the water the specks would show, so if I had to guess I'd say that's an Olive Rockfish or Johny bass. Here's a good pic of a Yellowtail with it's specks. Last edited by Fiskadoro; 11-26-2013 at 11:19 PM. |
