White Island, 7-23-13

Launched off Cherry Beach at about 5:45 with Landwhale. ALmost flipped getting in my yak, was a little rushed to in between waves (it was a little bigger than normal. Wanted to avoid getting wet, but the almost capsizing had me pretty wet anyways. Got out to the island pretty quick and started fishing our normal areas. Water was 64-66º, breezy with off and on clouds.

Long story short, fished the kitchen sink for 2 lizards, tons of short bites, and a few farmed. Steve did much better with a few short bass (he pulled the trifecta) and lots of lizards. It was good to be fishing, but dang it was slow. Slow enough that we gave up the ghost at about 8:45 and headed in.

Coming in I watched one wave and decided to go for it. I mean it's Cherry. Well right behind me came the set of the day. I was almost on the beach and I got nailed. Steve (he was behind me) said I disappeared and then shot onto the beach. I was soaked and annoyed. Slow fishing and managed to almost flip landing at Cherry. What a day!

Surf at Cherry Beach? Now that's a rarity! This week's South swell had enough size and the right angle to bend into Long Beach. I was at 72nd street on Tuesday evening looking at the blown-out 2ft surf and was shocked when a solid 5-6 ft set rolled through. Would have been serious trouble in a kayak!

It was definitely flat most of the time. Just when I was going out and coming in did the waves show. When I surf with my friends they never paddle out with me. They know the sets will show when I paddle out. Never mind how well I time them. It's kind of a joke with us.
