LJ

Hit la jolla for the first time. I had fun! Making bait wasn't hard. Sardines and mackerel were on the top. I only caught one squid, though. After that, I caught a little kelp bass. Then, I was circled by a thresher and after a couple minutes, accidentally hooked into the thresher shark. He went arial a couple times, pulled me for a little then broke the line. Right when I was planning on heading back in about 1 pm, a guy in a boat pulled up and offered me some squid. I stayed out a little longer. That's when I hooked into something big that dragged me into the kelp and broke me off.
All in all a fun day. Saw lots of seals and a couple dolphins. Not as many boats as I expected.

Nice, sounds like you had an eventful day. Seems those are few and far between over there. Hope your next time out gives you something to take home.

Think I saw you hook that thresher. I wasn't on my yak because a couple of my buddies wanted to go out on a boat. Anyways, we saw that thing jumping and dragging you for a bit. Sounds like a fun day.

your FIRST LJ outing.... and you hook into a Thresher, and also something else good that kelps you.
you are blessed, or gifted, or both.

most peeps (including me) don't get that action level, until MANY "learning trips" out in LJ waters.

MY first LJ outing....

flipped yak on maiden launch attempt, lost 1 tackle box.
reels & gear doused in sand & salt.
almost flipped again on second launch attempt,
bailed kayak, and swam/waded it back to shallows.
finally made it out successfully, on 3rd launch attempt.

could not make bait. (had no fish finder, and NO CLUE)
fished plastics in kelp, and broke off/lost every jig i took out.
fished cut squid on bottom, for a handful of tiny sand dabs.
sea sick & chumming overboard multiple times.
barely avoided a second yak flip, during surf landing.

after "all that fun"... i was COMPLETELY HOOKED on yak fishing.
i was truly back out there at LJ, 2 days later, for a much better experience.

haha! Yeah, I have been told that I am gifted at fishing. I think I am just lucky. That and I have been fishing fresh water and surf my entire life. before I took the yak out to la jolla, I did a lot of trial runs in the bay. Also on Sunday the surf was very small. It was an easy launch. The only problems I had coming in was the tourists from one of the big groups.

yep, that is DEFINITELY the proper approach.

that idiot fisherman sitting in yellow yak in my signature pic, made the foolish decision to make that yellow Hobie's, AND the fisherman's, maiden kayak voyage.... be into LJ surf.

Blast from the past, Hobie Pedaller is Back!

This 2006 question taught me a lot, with lots of fishy guys chiming in on all things iron. Seems like the question comes up every few months, so I figured it was worth a bump.

Nice to see you back on the board Doug. Now if we could only get your old avatar back...

That sounds like a fun day. Hooking into a T, and the one mystery fish on your first time out isn't too shabby.

Yeah, I am super excited for my next trip. I am hoping to do better catching squid on my own. Planning on picking up an actual squid gannion.
