Thanks Wade for the Inspiration!
After seeing Wades teak side boards on his PA, I had to make something similar. I worked with some purple heart in the past making a few spear guns and had some leftover stock laying around. I used a template bit with my router and copied the stock HDPE side boards. They looked a bit plain and my wife bought me a inlay kit months ago so I thought what the heck, let's give it a try. I think the plastic bushing gives a bit, so inlays are not the greatest with this kit, but it will get the job done until I upgrade to a metal bushing kit. The clear coat is a clarified epoxy for surfboards, UV stabilized. The inlay is Black Walnut. Presently I'm working on a template for a YT and WSB and will post that when it is completed.

Dude, make a template for a LMB as well. Start selling them on various kayak sites and watch the extra cheese roll in! Nice work!

Nice pattern. Instead of wood, for the inlay, you can purchase sheets of Mother-of-pearl veneers that you can cut patterns out of and set in the teak for a nice design. Definitely fits for the marine theme.

How long are the side boards? A ruler would be nice, with mother of pearl for every hash mark.

that sure is some beautiful work Lipripper92592! Jarrod & i were just talking during a run to SD Bay how I am still temped to do a Abalone veneer inlay on a pressed up collage of exotic hardwoods that comes out looking akin to a multiple stringer Takayama.. I wonder if its possible to lay a strip of actual fish skin and keep some iridescent patterns that hold up to the finish coat like a skin stretched mount?

That looks really nice! I think you have inspired me to making some boards for my PA and inlaying them as well.
The biggest MOP plates you will get are only about 1.5 inches a side, so a pattern will have to be pieced together for a fish of any size, but it can be done fairly easily with a little work. There is also the option of Ablam sheets that are much larger. Here is my small bore silhouette levergun I did a while ago, now I'm anxious to start cutting pearl again!... Very cool. Wade did my sideboards and I like em so much I vowed to never drill into em. Now all I need to do is get em bloody.

I'm thinking of inlaying kelp stringers on both boards in contrasting wood, then putting in WSB, YT and Bass in pearl/abalone. Doing the whole thing in pearl would end up too pimped out I think... |

"You should have kept it - turns out the 39A is the most accurate and sought after rifle for levergun silhouette. They are selling for $600 now in good condition. Dad made the right choice for my 13th birthday back in '74..."
You've got to be kidding me!! mine was Christmas '74 right after my 13th birthday. We moved out to the country and some f---wad broke into the house and stole it. I bought an Anschutz after that-deadly accurate but not as much fun to shoot. |
