LJ mystery fish
I went out last Sunday. There was 1 boat, and I was one of 3 yaks out there. Odd because conditions were perfect. The other guys were fishing calicos successfully. I was floating around baited up with a freakishly large mack, whatever, I'll give it a shot. Slammed! Put up a typical fight.....for 6-7 SECONDS! Clean cut on the line! There wasn't a rough "dog attacking the newspaper" moment either when it happened. 65lb spectra with a long shot of 30lb mono. Didn't break at the knot, no sign of weak spots in it either, I always check prior. Reverse dropper loop. Boils down to time on the water, still a fun day. Any ideas?

Yes, the bottom, and my battery died so no FF I felt my pole jerk a little before the slam too. Don't Threshers tale whip their prey before the bite?

Dropper loop....hmmmmm.
This time of year if you were fishing near the kelp I'd say it was a sevengill, open water it could be a thresher. How much line did it take? Threshers tend to hit erratically and then once they have the bait take off fast instantly running off line. Their teeth are small and don't usually cut the line very quickly, the line usually comes back scrapped up where it's cut Seven gills grab the bait in a single heavy lunge, feel like you hooked a car when you set the hook, and usually cut off quickly like the line was cut with a knife do to the hook shape of thier teeth. I've hooked a ton of seven gills this time of year fishing macks on a dropper loop. Especially when fishing tight to the kelp. If had to guess that'd be my call. |
